Bro’s Cajun Cuisine isn’t closed, but owner Darrell Breaux is ready to retire. The business — which Breaux started in Nashville 1988 after he moved from Lafayette, La. — has been on the market for at least a year, which is why you may or may not have heard reports of it closing. But due to some zoning issues — whoever buys has to have a plan for what’s going on the property before the deal is sealed — Breaux has had a tough time selling the huge lot on Charlotte Avenue. For now, that might be a problem for Breaux, but it’s good news for us, because we like paying less than $10 for a huge plate of jambalaya and fixin’s. Normally, the further you get from Louisiana, the weaker the spice, but Breaux’s brown-style jambalaya (which I tend to prefer over the red, tomatoey version) is truly spicy, made with juicy, marinated pork, crispy thin slices of homemade smoked sausage, peppers, onions, celery and rice. The plate also comes with a corn cake and two sides of your choosing from their daily specials, which run the gamut from chunks of cantaloupe to cucumber salad to greens and various fried vegetables. On my most recent visit I chose fried okra and new potatoes, which were just as delightfully spicy as the jambalaya. It’s almost too much food for one person, but somehow I always manage to get it all down.
