King Solomon Gyro — painted a striking orange-and-black and situated along a busy stretch of a busy street — is a can’t-miss stop on the Gallatin Avenue gyro circuit, yet it has come to my attention that a number of my neighbors have failed to pay their respects to the king. They should remedy that. Based solely on service, this place would be worth revisiting. Every time I’ve been, the guys inside the drive-thru shack have made me smile while I waited, briefly, for my food. But a low-key gyro shack does not live and die on service alone, and the food here is well worth the spare change it will cost you. I’ve strayed from the No. 1 (classic gyro sandwich, spicy fries and a drink) a number of times, but I always come back to that reliable standard. Served with cucumber sauce, lettuce and tomatoes on a spongy pita, this gyro sandwich stacks up favorably with its Gallatin Avenue neighbors — and the seasoned fries are really good too. If you manage to navigate the drive-thru without throwing a wrench in their labyrinthine logistical system, they might be so pleasantly surprised that they’ll give you some falafel on the house.
