El Jaliciense — Tacos — $1.50 each

The tacos at El Jaliciense are simple enough: stacked corn tortillas, meat, cilantro and onions. The East Side restaurant offers nine different meat options, including cow tongue and tripe for the more adventurous, as well as reliable stalwarts like chorizo and steak. There aren’t any New South crossover tacos — no hot chicken or pulled pork, though a filling of birria (meat stew) comes close to the latter at El Jaliciense, which takes its name from the Western Mexican state of Jalisco. While tequila originally comes from Jalisco, you won’t find margaritas here, but the restaurant does have an extensive selection of imported beers. It’s the ultimate cheap eat: Three tacos and a beer, plus complimentary chips and salsa, will set you back just north of $8, tax included. Also recommended: the guacamole and the ceviche.
