Today’s Takeout Pick: Tennessee Brew Works

Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. We will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today's pick: Tennessee Brew Works.

So it’s come to this. I try to approach these recommendations by considering whether the restaurant is something I can write about and recommend, also whether they're serving something I’m craving. So I have to admit: I went with an obvious choice for this week. When I saw that Tennessee Brew Works was offering a special beer-and-burger bundle, I said to myself, “Self, that’s exactly what you’ve been looking for!”

It wasn’t just the easy way out, by the way. TBW makes some fantastic beers, and the “Five Beer Burger” has been a personal favorite for years. The name comes from the fact almost every element of the burger platter is made using one of the brewery’s beers. The patty is made using lean Black Hawk Farms beef. The bun is baked in-house using Extra Easy ESB. There’s Southern Wit in the comeback sauce, and Basil Ryeman in the ketchup. The onions are braised in Pie Town Porter, and the pickles are flavored with Cutaway Rye IPA. The cheese is, well, it’s just cheese, but it’s white cheddar and delicious. On the whole, it’s a fine burger, plus it comes with fries. You can also order an Impossible veggie patty if you prefer.

So the burger is solid, but it’s the added perk that really called to me. Tennessee Brew Works is offering that burger, those fries and either a six-pack or four-pack of their craft beers for just $22.99 — and the easy curbside pick-up makes it easy to get your seven-course meal home while the food is still hot.

On the beer side, you have your choice of sixers of Southern Wit, State Park Blonde, Cutaway, King Chestnut or Extra Easy, or you can choose to take home a quartet of their specialty beers like 1927 IPA, Patsy Clineapple (a hazy IPA) or Tripel Star. There is a little upcharge on those last two options, but it’s clearly displayed when you order from TBW’s website.

In another nice gesture, the folks at Tennessee Brew Works are celebrating Community Sundays through the end of October — they’re donating $1 from every pint sold on Sunday to the Tennessee Craft Brewers Guild. Thanks to multiple outdoor spaces and a variety of indoor seating options, the taproom at Tennessee Brew Works feels like a pretty safe spot to enjoy a pint or two while you help out the local brewing industry.
