Today’s Takeout Pick: Coneheads

Much of the restaurant industry has had to rapidly change its business model due to COVID-19, and we’re highlighting the Nashville places that are attempting to stay open. Each day we will give you a critic’s pick for a restaurant and a dish, as well as a running list of restaurants still open that you can support. Today: Coneheads.

Sometimes, an idea is just so crazy that it actually works. That’s the thesis behind Coneheads, the brainchild of Vanderbilt-linebacker-turned-restaurateur Marcus Buggs. At his attractive eatery at 1315 Dickerson Pike, Buggs has created an entire menu based around a somewhat wacky concept: fried chicken served in waffle cones topped with your choice of sauces and “capped” with a selection of what would traditionally be considered side items.

When you think about it, the idea isn't completely crazy. Fried chicken is considered one of the ultimate items in the pantheon of comfort foods, and chicken and waffles are definitely a thing. Non-poultry eaters can opt for fried cauliflower instead without missing out on the crunch contributed by the salty batter after a quick trip through hot oil. If you’re not obsessed with making your food portable, you can also choose to have your protein served in a more traditional basket meal.

Whichever route you choose, Buggs and crew are serving up some solid food. Once you pick a basket or a cone (two sizes of cones are available), order your choice of sauces from a list including chipotle ranch, a spicy “Jam” sauce, tangy white barbecue or a sweet and herbal rosemary agave. Then decide what you’d like your cone capped off with from a choice of pineapple slaw, mac-and-cheese or what Coneheads boasts are “the best damned grits.” All three of those items are also available as side dishes for basket orders along with fries or a helping of that fried cauliflower.

Simplicity is exactly what some of us are looking for in these confusing times, especially if it’s executed as well as at Coneheads. Buggs grew up in the family restaurant business, so he’s not coming at this out of nowhere. While Vandy never finished above .500 in any of the seasons that Buggs played for them, he’s definitely part of a winner here!
