Nashville Barrel Co. Plans Building in Railyard District

A building to house a distilling company tasting room, bottling operations and offices is being planned for Nashville’s emerging Railyard District.

The two-floor building at 132 Green St. would accommodate Nashville Barrel Co., a boutique entity that, to date, has focused on the sourcing of barrels for spirits aging. The site is located less than a mile from both downtown’s Rolling Mill Hill neighborhood and the Cumberland River.

A special exception related to height will be needed for the project to move forward. A Nov. 15 hearing with the Metro Board of Zoning Appeals has been scheduled.

Michael Hinds, co-majority owner with Casey Kostrzebski of Nashville Barrel, owns the property on which the building is planned via CCM Holding LLC. The LLC paid $250,000 for the 0.16-acre property, on which no building sits, in July, according to Metro records. Hinds says the team estimates the project will carry a price tag of approximately $1 million. Nashville-based Lines will serve as architect, with S+H Group to handle land planning and engineering.

Hinds, who has 10 years of experience raising money for charities via bourbon-related events (he sits on the board of the nonprofit Bourbon Charity), says if all goes as planned, a March groundbreaking will take place with a completion by the end of summer 2021.

Hinds says the company eventually hopes to manufacture its own line of spirits. Currently, the company (James Davenport is a minority owner) operates from no physical space and undertakes bottling via a third-party source.

To date, Nashville Barrel has hand-selected and bought bourbon and rye whiskeys on the open market and bottled them with its company brand. Its products have been offered at a handful of local retailers. In November, Nashville Barrel will launch a small batch release it plans for availability at most of Tennessee wine and spirits retailers.

Hinds says Nashville Barrel has been sourcing aged barrels for distilled spirits for about two years. However, the company has been fully active for about six months.

“We are pleased to able to offer another option for local whiskey enthusiasts,” Hinds says. “We’re eager to help Nashvillians further their love for spirits and, in particular, bourbon and rye whiskeys.”
