East Nashville's Fort Louise Closes

Remember last month when I wrote the sentence "Some losses are mourned more deeply than others" in reference to certain restaurant closures? Well, here we are Jan. 4, and I am in mourning.

Fort Louise posted on social media yesterday that it has closed permanently. The restaurant, located in the Inglewood neighborhood of East Nashville, had been closed for the holidays, but scheduled to reopen for its popular brunch on Saturday. From the post:

We are sad to announce that Fort Louise has closed. We are grateful to everyone who loved and supported this project. We had a blast contributing to the Inglewood community and will miss all of you. We will miss our hashbrown waffles and the Frozen Defiance, Burger Tuesday’s, the tallow candle and all of your dogs on our back patio. Thanks for all of the fun times and good luck out there when you get #hungrylikeafort .

No more curry fried chicken served in a bucket. No more cauliflower dipped in Green Goddess. No more neighborhood discount. No more Rose Colored Glasses (that's gin, hibiscus and rose tea, lime and agave). No elderflower fizz mocktail.

Opened summer 2017 in the little blue house next to Mitchell Delicatessen (once home to vintage retailer Old Made Good and then to the short-lived Perk & Cork), Fort Louise was a favorite of Riverside Villagers who wanted something a little different from neighborhood stalwarts Village Pub & Beer Garden and Mitchell's. The interior was cozy but sophisticated.

The American-comfort-food spot was opened by Jessica Bowers and chef Greg Biggers (of Chicago's Café des Architectes) with Jonathan Hawks as chef de cuisine. Nashvillian Brody Kimbro (formerly of Urban Grub and Eastland Café) joined as chef de cuisine in June 2018.

Initially open for lunch too, Fort Louise eventually moved to dinner and weekend brunches, which were popular on the dog-friendly back patio in warm weather.

No word was immediately available as to why the restaurant shuttered or what's next for the team or the little blue house.
