Chef Star Maye
Hillsboro Village's CBD-centric coffee shop Anzie Blue continues to up its food offerings with the recent hire of new executive chef Star Maye. Since starting up in Belle Meade with fairly limited food offerings and a specialty of providing meat-and-cheese boards to go, they are now taking full advantage of the expanded kitchen facilities in their new home across the street from the Belcourt.
It’s too rare that we can announce the appointment of female executive chefs or BIPOC kitchen leaders, so it’s great to see Maye receive this opportunity. She brings a wealth of experience to the job as a graduate of the Culinary Institute and someone with leadership positions in local kitchens including The Palm, City Winery and the Governor’s Club.
Maye has revamped the food menu at Anzie Blue, offering breakfast options like omelets, scratch-made biscuits and gravy, breakfast tacos and chicken and waffles. The combination lunch/dinner menu includes more substantial fare than you might expect from a coffee shop. From a four-cheese mac-and-cheese bake to an Italiano melt sandwich on a baguette to a fried-chicken club, there are definitely some stick-to-your-ribs options in case that CBD gets you feeling a bit peckish.
Mayes is excited about her new gig. "I am looking forward to working alongside like-minded women at Anzie Blue,” she says in the job announcement. “I have waited for 20 years for an opportunity to work in an environment that nourishes women’s unique strengths, and I will wear the executive chef title with pride.”
