Courtesy of FMRL, two of the finest improvisers you’ll see anywhere appear Friday night in the backyard of Fond Object on the East Side. Dip into Asheville, N.C., guitarist Tashi Dorji’s extensive catalog of recordings and you’ll hear dozens of unique emotional landscapes channeled through the guitar, working within the gridded framework of the fretboard and then stretching or even breaking those boundaries when required. Wu Fei, born in Beijing and currently residing in Nashville, has extensive training in traditional Chinese music, Western classical music and improvisational traditions. She also brings to the table her mastery of an expressive and ancient instrument, a 21-string zither called the guzheng, along with an array of collaborations — check out her YouTube channel for footage of work with guitarist Gyan Riley, banjo ace Abigail Washburn and Nashville ensemble chatterbird, among others. Dorji and Wu will each play a set, and then they’ll improvise together. STEPHEN TRAGESER
