Late summer in Middle Tennessee certainly makes it feel like we’re living on the equator, except we’re getting kind of a raw deal — all the sticky heat, no cool beaches. The inaugural Deep Tropics Music, Art and Style Festival will do its damnedest to make you forget you’re basically living in a Crock-Pot. Among the notable menu items are visual art and multimedia displays by local folks like champion muralist Bryan Deese and lighting artist Jonathon Kingsbury, as well as touring artists like Timeboy (whose credits include collaborations with Flying Lotus) and Strange Loop (a collective of video artists whose work you might have seen in shorts on Comedy Central or Viceland). The real draw is two full days of dance and electronic sets that put local standard-bearers like KDSML on the same bill with national talents like Gramatik, Paper Diamond and Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf. See deeptropics.org for a full schedule. STEPHEN TRAGESER
