Jesus Christ Superstar created quite a stir when it first came out, even sparking protests at its Broadway premiere in 1971. More than 50 years later, this celebrated rock opera may seem a bit less controversial, but it still has the power to move an audience. Beginning Thursday, you can revisit this mega-hit musical as Studio Tenn closes out its season with an ambitious, star-studded production. Featuring music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice, the play reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of his betrayer, Judas Iscariot. Director Patrick Cassidy has assembled a fabulous cast, starting with Tony Award nominee Adam Pascal (Rent; Aida) in the title role. Pascal is joined by Grammy nominee Mykal Kilgore (Broadway’s Motown: The Musical; Hair) as Judas and the versatile Olivia Valli (who played opposite Pascal in the first national tour of Pretty Woman: The Musical) as Mary Magdalene. Plus, there are plenty of local favorites, including Geoff Davin, Jennifer Whitcomb-Oliva, Scott Stewart, Parker Jenkins, Harrison Hall and more.
