Some folks collect things for the status they confer, or perhaps the knowledge or simple satisfaction gleaned from having them. It’s a bit different for Nashville musician Spencer Cullum, a U.K.-born singer-songwriter who’s also long been an in-demand steel player. The conceit of the run of solo LPs he started in 2021 is that his friendships with talented musicians are like rare coins he’s collected, and he shares them in light that lets them shine. Listening to a new Coin Collection LP for the first time is a fun trip, exploring the latest iteration of Cullum’s patchwork quilt of English folk-influenced pastoral psych and finding out where instrumentalists and songsmiths like Erin Rae, Allison de Groot, Annie Williams and Cullum’s Shrunken Elvis bandmates Rich Ruth and Sean Thompson fit in. He announced that the third installment, released March 27, will be the last. This time, Cullum is reflecting on the current painful state of humankind, including our disconnection from and sometimes wanton disrespect for the natural world, sometimes using a folk-horror perspective: “I made my own A24 horror film,” Cullum says, quoted in the liner notes.
