Ichiko-Aoba_RAH-202

Seeing a show at The Caverns feels like being inside a whale. So it’s the perfect spot to hear Japanese musician Ichiko Aoba, whose latest album was inspired by creatures she encountered diving in the waters off a remote island. Luminescent Creatures, released in February of last year, features Aoba’s ethereal voice and minimalistic acoustic style. She plays guitar, piano, clarinet, accordion and flute, exploring liminal worlds through softly textured ambient folk. Peaceful and meditative, Aoba forms a raw openness using strange and thrilling effects. Since I do not speak Japanese, I have no idea what she is singing about. Sounds ritualistic. Or she could blissfully be checking off her grocery list. Like any artist who creates a strong sense of place, she brings her listeners along for the deep dive.

6 p.m. at The Caverns
