Calpurnia w/Lunar Vacation

Talking last year to journalist Bianca M. in an interview with the online magazine Girlfriend, Finn Wolfhard, who leads Canadian rock band Calpurnia, offered his take on The Beatles: “I just can’t see The Beatles when they first started being like, ‘We need to write a hit.’ They were just passionate about it.” Wolfhard’s statement ignores the ambition that drove the Fab Four to write hit tunes like “She Loves You” but still, the 16-year-old Wolfhard — who is also an actor noted for his role as Mike in the television series Stranger Things — is right about The Beatles’ passion for music. After releasing their 2018 debut single “City Boy,” which became a substantial hit, Calpurnia followed it with an EP, Scout, that references glam, power pop and indie rock. I bet Wolfhard has paid attention to the career of another pop savant who hit it big at 16, Alex Chilton, whose music he has perhaps studied along with the deluxe reissue of Rubber Soul. Also appearing are Atlanta popsters Lunar Vacation, who released the fine 2018 EP Artificial Flavors. Saturday’s show at Cannery Ballroom is sold out. EDD HURT
