Ominous electronic music in its various forms can instantly set a mood. But the best practitioners of synth pop also know how to use their equipment and techniques to tell stories. Boy Harsher, the Northampton, Mass., duo featuring Jae Matthews and Gus Muller, offers the total package on their self-released second LP Careful. It’s an impressive collection of dark, danceable soundscapes whose mechanical components seem eerily alive, and it delivers compelling narratives of fear, loss and longing that stick with you long after the album’s finished. They’re coming to East Side all-ages space Drkmttr on Sunday with creative and aggressive New Orleans no wavers Special Interest along for the ride. Nashville electronic producer Erika Glück will also play, but this will be her last show as a local, so make sure you come by to wish her well. STEPHEN TRAGESER
