India has a rich and varied cinematic history, with roots in ancient Indian epic poetry, Sanskrit drama and traditional folk theater. The country’s film industry, known as Bollywood — a portmanteau of Bombay and Hollywood — is one of the most productive in the world. Though Bollywood went through a gritty crime thriller phase, it’s well-known for its family-centric romantic musicals, complete with sparkling, colorful costuming and energetic dancing. Plaza Mariachi is offering a taste of the spectacle with a Bollywood Night. (If you haven’t been to Plaza Mariachi yet, it’s worth a trip — or several — for tasty international cuisine and cool boutiques in a mall-like setting.) Bollywood Night will feature dance performances by the local group Upasana Dance Company and a free dance lesson at 8:30 p.m. Taj Indian Restaurant will provide food — trust us, it’s tasty — and there will be live music, a DJ, and aerial and fire performances by Beyond Wings. If that sounds over the top, then think of it as an entry point into Bollywood and the culture of Bombay (aka Mumbai) — as well as a way to meet local folks who are cultivating that culture here in Nashville.
