The Porch Writers’ Collective has been building on its reputation as a dependable source of great literary events. The latest brings Iowa-based writer Andre Perry to Nashville. Perry is the author of the 2019 essay collection Some of Us Are Very Hungry Now, a collection that centers largely on his experiences with racism and his constant need and struggle to create. The book could be described as experimental in nature — it includes essays, screenplays, imagined TV interviews, multiple-choice questions and letters. NPR hails Perry as a new voice in contemporary nonfiction, calling his prose “energetic and strange … a mixture of beautiful and gritty, educated and desperate, brilliant and dark.” Perry will be joined by three local luminaries. Chet Weise’s poetry can be deadpan or irreverent, but also romantic and searching. Also on the bill is Ciona Rouse. Hearing Rouse read feels magical — she conjures a mood, a groundswell of feeling, and that’s transformative. Adam Voith probes his childhood memories in his writing, delivering short, potent anecdotes that are both funny and tragic. I can hardly think of a better way to spend a Saturday night. 7 p.m. at Bongo After Hours Theatre, 2007 Belmont Blvd. ERICA CICCARONE
