Nashville boasts a healthy, diverse art scene, and several up-and-coming artists are women of color. Ashley Mintz’s Being Black in America: A Comparison of Past and Present wrestles with charged issues: the videotaped killings of unarmed black people by law enforcement, the cultural leave-behinds of slavery, and whether or not you should touch a black woman’s hair. (Nope! Never!) Being Black in America examines generational learnings about race handed down from the antebellum South. Her bold, textured paintings include loopy text and pop culture imagery — a sensual delight. Opening reception Oct. 7, 4:30-6:30 p.m. ERICA CICCARONE
