As the new year for movies rubs its eyes and staggers to life, many of us are still trying to catch up with what we missed last year — either because it didn't show up in local theaters (which gets rarer all the time), we just couldn't catch it the first time around, or because it hasn't made its way yet to Nashville in limited release. If you're making a list, start with these auxiliary lists of 2015's best movies from participants in the Scene's year-end film poll last week:

When legendary Russian auteur Aleksei German died in 2013, he left behind this extraordinary final film, a phantasmagoric adaptation of the revered sci-fi novel by the Strugatsky brothers (authors of the source novel for Tarkovsky's STALKER). HARD TO BE A GOD began percolating in German's consciousness in the mid-1960s, and would actively consume him for the last 15 years of his life. Happily, he brought the film close enough to completion for his wife and son to apply the finishing touches immediately after his passing. Taking place on the planet Arkanar, which is in the midst of its own Middle Ages, the film focuses on Don Rumata, one of a group of earth scientists who have been sent to Arkanar with the proviso that they must not interfere in the planet's political or historical development. Treated by the planet's natives as a kind of divinity, Don Rumata is both godlike and impotent in the face of its chaos and brutality.

Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart, and Chloë Grace Moretz light up this scintillating showbiz drama from acclaimed director Olivier Assayas (Carlos). When she’s cast as the older lover in a romantic lesbian drama opposite an upstart young starlet (Moretz), an established middle-aged actress (Binoche) is overcome with personal insecurities and professional jealousies—all while sexual tension simmers between her and her personal assistant (Stewart). A bewitching tale of backstage rivalry, Clouds of Sils Maria is propelled by tour-de-force performances from three actresses at the top of their game.

There is just one week until Kate Mercer’s (Rampling) 45th wedding anniversary and the planning for the party is going well. But then a letter arrives for her husband (Courtenay). The body of his first love has been discovered, frozen and preserved in the icy glaciers of the Swiss Alps. By the time the party is upon them, five days later, there may not be a marriage left to celebrate.
