Prefab self-aware so-bad-it’s-good cult movies are nuisances that belong in a dumpster with every copy of Birdemic 2 and Sharknado 3. Only decent advance word has us holding out hope midnight Friday and Saturday at The Belcourt for Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance — the belated (like, a quarter-century) sequel to one of the funniest Belcourt midnight movies ever, the stupefying 1991 VHS action opus Samurai Cop. Twenty-four years after Amir Shervan’s original, head-busting crime fighters Joe “The Samurai” Marshall (Mathew Karedas) and Frank “The Other Guy” Washington (Mark Frazer) return to take out another unintelligible villain — but wait! Could it be? You got it: The chief baddie is none other than The Room’s master thespian Tommy Wiseau, no longer content just to dodge plastic cutlery. Co-starring Bai Ling and directed and co-written by veteran distributor Gregory Hatanaka (whose Cinema Epoch rescued the original from discount dump-bin obscurity), it’s one of the last midnight movies before The Belcourt begins its six-month renovation.
