Long before he was banished to a never-ending purgatory in CGI-smothered Middle Earth, New Zealand director Peter Jackson made a series of awesomely weird and depraved low-budget exploitation films that sent some patrons streaming from theaters in disgust, while also garnering him a loyal and fanatical fan following around the world. Possibly the most jaw-dropping of all his mandible-unhinging epics is 1989’s Meet the Feebles, which will be playing at the Cult Fiction Underground at

Logue’s Black Raven Emporium

in East Nashville Friday and Saturday at 8 and 10 p.m.

Meet the Feebles revolves around a pretty simple concept, namely: What if John Waters in his Pink Flamingo days had taken over as producer on The Muppet Show? All manner of puppet depravity gets played out on the big screen, from a smorgasbord of sexual perversity to mass murder, from interspecies miscegenation to drug addiction — and all with a gleeful irreverence that is hard to resist. So leave the kids at home, because this is one puppet show you don’t want to miss!
