People's Branch Theatre artistic director Ross Brooks' original play begs the never-before-pondered question "What happens to old gods when no one believes in them anymore?" His farcical setup finds none other than Zeus, Dionysus, Hermes and Hera hanging out in a bar on Mt. Olympus over Easter weekend, all four dreading their inevitable irrelevance, with Monday morning signaling Christianity's triumph as the reigning faith system. (Likely the way McCain-Palin felt right before Election Day.) The playwright calls it a "ridiculously tender look at the personalities of deities." It's also apparently an exploration into what it feels like to have one's followers lose faith. If it's depression we're talking about, then most everyone will relate, but presumably there will be laughs here. Fortunately, Brooks (also directing) has gathered some of Nashville's finest young thespians. Benjamin Reed, Brad Oxnam, Amanda Bailey and Laura Marsh are all gifted and poised, and they've all gained serious experience on Music City stages over the past few years. One or two Herculean performances couldn't hurt. The play is rated R.
