While the inaugural installment of local soul label Outta Sight Records' new residency may have set the bar for funkiness extremely high — The Junkyard Horns covered not one but two cuts off Herbie Hancock’s Fat Albert Rotunda! — but they are definitely not slacking on the second installment. This week we get a visit from the Chicago soul troupe The Right Now, who definitely fall squarely within the Chi-town soul tradition. Not as slick and sugary as their compatriots up north in Motown, not as down and dirty as our own Southern variety, you could say The Right Now have set their soul to sizzle just-so on their debut album Carry Me Home. With powerful vocals from frontwoman Stefanie Berecz and more horns than Gabriel’s air cavalry, The Right Now are some serious soul cats and a welcome addition to our funky February.
