Maia Sharp at the Bluebird

She’s the daughter of country songwriter Randy Sharp, and she’s made good on the pedigree. Sharp has written songs for artists such as Trisha Yearwood, The Dixie Chicks and Cher in addition to cultivating a solo career with a quartet of releases the last dozen years. Her music weaves strands of pop, jazz, folk and rock into something much richer than your typical adult-contemporary fare. Her voice has more character than siren quality (think Christine McVie), but she more than compensates with smart writing, whether contemplating the discovery of her relationship’s limited romantic perspective in “Whole Flat World,” heralding the conformity-busting power of a “Red Dress” or pushing against the hypocritical strictures of “Polite Society.” The last appears on her upcoming Don Was-produced album.
