Leon Russell at Third & Lindsley

The Master of Space and Time, as Russell has called himself for 40 years, is more spacey than timely these days. But even in his heyday, Russell seemed detached from his era. An Americana artist before anyone considered it a marketing term, Russell combines country, gospel, rock and soul into a distinctive sound that struts the path between juke joint and church. Russell’s Sunday morning piano style and gravelly heart-of-Saturday-night voice remain his signatures, and his other trademarks—flowing white hair and beard and big shades—continue to convey the air of a mystical shaman older than his years, even at age 67. He’ll roll through “Delta Lady,” “A Song for You” and “This Masquerade” and familiar covers “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” and “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” with the same sweet Southern lope that always has made him special.
