In addition to the outstanding Paint Made Flesh exhibit, the Frist Center for the Visual Arts is currently showing a knockout collection of Medieval art and artifacts, spanning over 1200 years. Including early Christian artifacts from the third century through Italian work from the Early Renaissance, the show features a staggering array of pieces all showcased in one of the best gallery designs of any of the recent shows at the Center. Interestingly, the objects in the show date roughly from the adoption of Christianity by Constantine through to the Protestant Reformation. Paired with the contemporary work in the 'Flesh exhibit, this show serves as a unique counterpoint given the religious nature of much of the work and the stylized proportions of painted figures from the Medieval period.
Mondays-Sundays. Starts: Feb. 13. Continues through June 7, 2009
