Splices: Mudbound at the Belcourt, Justice League Everywhere and More

Mudbound

Opening Friday at the Belcourt for a limited one-week run is Mudbound, a period drama directed and co-written by Nashville native Dee Rees. The film has already garnered a great deal of critical acclaim, but if you can’t make it to a screening, don’t fret — it also hits Netflix on Friday. Read more about Mudbound in our Critics’ Picks.

In addition to Greta Gerwig’s mighty promising Lady Bird, also opening in cineplexes is Zack Snyder’s Justice League. So, is the latest Batfleck-featuring DC effort any good? Read our review to find out. If you’re looking for something a little more heartstring-tuggy, also opening wide this weekend is the family dramedy Wonder (not to be confused with Wonderstruck, which is still playing at the Belcourt, and which we reviewed in last week’s issue of the Scene … though we didn’t love it). If you’re going to hit the Belcourt for one of the arthouse’s holdover films, I once again recommend Sean Baker’s gorgeous The Florida Project — though I hear the Jane Goodall documentary Jane is exceptional as well.

But if you’d rather stick to your couch, might I recommend one of the most captivating 80 minutes of television I’ve ever seen. The season finale of Nathan for You, titled Finding Frances, aired last week on Comedy Central, and it’s a harrowing, sometimes cringe-inducing, sometimes utterly delightful piece of art. Watch it.
