Terrell Thornhill is a master printmaker, paper-maker, and artist from Nashville. The medium he works in is primarily screen printing, but he’s quick to point out a distinction that makes his process unique. He calls it “Old School” screen printing. This type uses methods from the early 1900s—before photographic stencils were invented—when every part of the process was done by hand. Many of these earlier processes have been sadly forgotten, lost to time. Thornhill is passionate about reviving these processes and teaching others what he’s learned to further the craft.
In this upcoming exhibition at PopStart Creative Studios, Thornhill will be displaying nearly 20 years of his screen printed works. Many of these were created using the “old school” technique. Technically this process is known as Reduction Method screen printing, and Thornhill actually pulled machine patents from the 1920s and reverse-engineered them to rediscover it. This process allows virtually unlimited color impressions, using one, single silkscreen where the stencil is “reduced” over the previous one while modern methods use a separate screen for each color.
This exhibition intends to expand the public’s concept of what screen printing as a fine art medium is capable of creating. Several pieces will be featured in this collection and displayed to the public for the first time. Additionally, the Popstart venue is hosting an open house offering attendees free use of their creative studio spaces during the opening reception. This place is Selfie Central, y’all.
