Have you ever wanted to be an archaeologist? Do you love to learn about local history? Well then come on out to the Tennessee Council for Professional Archaeology’s first ever Archaeology Day at Bells Bend Park (4187 Old Hickory Blvd) on September 16th from 10am to 3pm. The event is part of Tennessee Archaeology Awareness Month, which takes place every September in Tennessee, and is free and open to the public.
This event is intended to provide people of all ages a way to learn about archaeology and history in Tennessee and a chance to interact with local archaeologists. A variety of archaeology and history related organizations will be on hand at the event to teach participants about archaeological methods and the history of Tennessee through hands on activities that will be fun for everyone.
Attendees will get to try their hand at excavating, archery, atlatl (spear) throwing, basket weaving, and more. They will also get to learn what archaeologists actually do, the different technologies archaeologists use, and how archaeologists use what they find to interpret the past. A lecture series is also planned, where local archaeologist will present their research and answer questions.
Event planning is still ongoing and it is our hope to add as many activities as we can. For up-to-date information, visit our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/Tennessee.Archaeology/).
