Elton John at Bridgestone Arena, October 2018

To call Elton John a cultural treasure is a bit like saying Porsche makes some fast cars. In 2018, the peerless showman and songsmith announced his planned retirement from touring with a three-year extravaganza called Farewell Yellow Brick Road. The show came to Bridgestone Arena in both 2018 and 2019. Many dates had to be postponed last year; yet another reason to curse the pandemic.

Today John has announced one final, final goodbye — with stadium dates. The tour kicks off in Europe in May 2022, and is set to hit Nissan Stadium on Oct. 2, 2022. Tickets go on sale via Ticketmaster next Wednesday, June 30. Prices haven’t yet been announced.

J.R. Lind reviewed the 2018 Bridgestone stop for our live-review column The Spin, and captured John’s impact pretty perfectly. “Elton John is ubiquitous in the way the best musicians always are,” Lind wrote. “His songs aren't a relic of a certain time, they are part of the fabric of every time, weaving in and out of our lives, their titles chapter headings to a collective autobiography. … The set was not intended for the Elton John anoraks clutching their original copies of 17-11-70. It was for everyone, because everyone is a fan.”

The upcoming legs of the tour promise much of the same, but with stadium-scale production. Check out John’s video announcement below.
