With nine full-lengths under his belt, 38-year-old Cass McCombs is already something of a journeyman, his name oft accompanied by terms like “underrated” and “cult following.” The singer-songwriter’s latest, however — Mangy Love, released on Epitaph sister label Anti- and featuring a guest spot from current indie darling Angel Olsen — finds him poised to reach a broader audience sooner than later. A voracious musical omnivore who loves to play with contrasts, McCombs juxtaposes breezy, coffeehouse-friendly playing owing to ’70s soul and West Coast psych — the Northern California native is an avowed Deadhead — with searing, black-comedic lyrical bluntness that sneaks up upon closer listen. He’ll be joined Wednesday by Delicate Steve (né Steve Marion), a multi-instrumentalist and fellow genre-hopper from New Jersey with a pair of records out on David Byrne’s Luaka Bop imprint.
