Few destinations rival Cheekwood for the title of “Best Place to Go on a Mid-Autumn Day,” and this art reception threesome only ups the ante. Hot New York photographer Greg Miller has been returning to Nashville for the last couple of years to capture images of his hometown, taken with an old-school 8x10 wood camera. His series Nashville Memoir, in the Temporary Contemporary gallery, eschews obvious Nashville locations in favor of side streets, yards and apartment complexes, and his human subjects suggest untold stories that linger tantalizingly out of reach. Dichos: Words to Live, Love and Laugh by in Latin America, in the Courtyard Gallery, explores the art of Latin American bus and truck drivers who decorate their vehicles with elaborate hand-painted adages and amusing expressions. The exhibit includes 46 color photographs, miniature dichos-laden vehicles and full-size metal bumpers adorned with the ornate folk art. In the Video Installation Galleries, six recent graduates from universities in Tennessee and surrounding states examine themes ranging from consumer culture to becoming an adult in New Direction: Video Artists Explore Southern Identity. The reception features light hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar and music by Serenatta.
