  • Predictions, Schmedictions: One of the Biggest Rock Albums of 2009 From Nashville?!?!?!?

It's a mere two weeks into 2009, and prophets that they are, MTV has already called the biggest upcoming records of the year. Megastars like dad-punks Green Day and how-can-we-miss-you-if- you-won't-go-away beasts U2 will no doubt blow our collective minds with new albums, but lest you were afraid Nashville wouldn't be represented, Paramore is working on a little TBA gem that will take us all back to the tender tender feelings of junior high. Check it: With plenty of emotional rollercoaster mo

  • There's Going to Be a Concert at Sommet Center! [Updated]

Sorry for another blind post. I got an email saying there will be a press conference today at Sommet Center to announce a Major Concert Event Coming to Nashville. I ignored the email at first, since I figure there are lots of concerts at Sommet Center, none of which warrant my going to a press conference to find out about them. Then I got a voicemail saying that the mayor would be making the announcement. The mayor? Of course, Gold thinks this must mean U2 is playing because they are, after al

  • The Cream-pire Strikes Back: 10 Bands With More Sci-fi Cred Than U2

If you guys didn't know, I'm a huge dork. When I'm not thinking about music I'm probably think about robots, or lasers or spaceships. Or--more likely than not--all three. Which is why when io9 proclaimed U2 "Science Fiction's Finest Band" I got a little miffed. Now, I like U2 as much as the next guy (as long as the next guy isn't Adam Gold) but I just can't accept U2 as the apex of near-sighted, sweaty palmed sounds. I didn't get my ass kicked in elementary school to let pop's biggest blowhard

    * Janet Timmons of Out the Other has a newish tumblelog, Elliston and Eighth, to help you keep the Nashville rock flowing through your veins. * Lightning 100 is playing nothing but U2 today. (U2'sday lasts until 7 p.m.) Gold is having multiples as we speak. * Hotpipes are up next for a Lake Fever Session. (Via WOTT.) * Meltface Records sent me a copy of the Baby Teeth Thieves' album, which is currently a front-runner for favorite band name and favorite album art of '09. (See above.) More ab

  • Carpenter's 'The Thing' Kicks Off Lenten Film Series Tonight

If the fanboy term "fawesome" didn't exist before John Carpenter's 1982 remake of The Thing, it would have to have been invented. You got your shape-shifting aliens, your crab-walking heads, your many-tentacled dogs, and the ultimate Carpenter ensemble of square-jawed, all-business he-men led by Kurt Russell and Keith David. Where would you expect to watch one of the goriest, creepiest splatter movies of all time? At the Downtown Presbyterian Church, of course, where The Thing screens tonigh

  • The McBastard's Obligatory St. Patrick's Day Post: Five Irish Bands that Rock Harder than U2

I have my issues with St. Patrick's Day. Nobody wanted to hang out with the Irish during 700 years of English oppression, but once we get a drinking holiday, everybody's "Irish" for approximately 24 hours, plus hangovertime. Kinda fucked, folks. I also have my issues with U2; I know Bono saved all those puppies from the World Trade Center or whatever, but his omnipresence over the last two and a half decades has become insufferable and the music was never that good to begin with. So as my Amatue

  • Coldplay Play Sommet Center June 6

If I'd included the real pictures of the real band members would you have known the difference?Guess where the Spin is going to be on June 6. Being that we want to make trade fair, more than likely we'll be at the Sommet Center. That's where England's not-so-newest-anymore hitmakers Coldplay will be performing on their--now extended--Viva La Vida tour. Despite my undying love for recent Cream punching bag U2, I am NOT a Coldplay fan--although it's nice to know that Radiohead could have been the

  • Free Meal, Movie at Downtown Presbyterian Tonight

Nothing goes together like German expressionism and a free bowl of soup, which makes the Downtown Presbyterian Church's ongoing Lenten Film Series one of the coolest cultural offerings in town. Tonight's feature is the 1920 silent horror film Der Golem, with the soundtrack provided by U2's Achtung, Baby. The film starts at 7 p.m., preceded by a light supper also provided free of charge. The church is located at 154 Fifth Ave. N. For more information, call 254-7584.

  • Roadtrip to Atlanta: U2 Play the Georgia Dome Oct. 6

    D. Ricky RodriguezI wish the water bottle was my...nevermind. As many of you know, I'm a diehard U2 fan. You might ask yourself, "What could cause this to happen? Is it his fault?" The mitigating circumstances that have led to my unabashed love of what has now become one of the most un-hip bands to persist in the highest echelon of super-stardom is, of course, rooted in childhood. I was the baby of my family, reared in a household with an older sibling who exposed my young palate to a lot of n

  • Kings of Leon on Today: Bigger Than Jonas Brothers

Kings of Leon were on the Today show Friday, and drew a gigantic crowd, prompting over 20,000 ticket requests, which happens to be the largest number in the history of the show's concert series--even more than the Jonas Brothers. (!) In this clip, the band gets interviewed by Meredith Viera, who asks, among other things, why the boys decided to start a band, since they didn't, y'know, play instruments. (Nathan played in church, and Matthew played guitar growin' up.) Will KOL be the next U2?

Want to hear that sleazy honkin' sax riff on "Brown Sugar" played by the guy who first laid it down? You'll get your chance Oct. 10 at the Germantown Street Festival, when Stones saxman Bobby Keys joins The Long Players to recreate the Sticky Fingers LP in its entirety. (And you were hoping they'd do U2's October. 'Tis the season.) Confirmed guest vocalists include Jonell Mosser and Danny Flowers. The LPs cap what sounds like a pretty cool music lineup for the neighborhood festival's main sta

Photo courtesy Next Big Nashville See the slideshow for more photos. Knowing we had a long Friday evening ahead of us on the Rock Block, we had ourselves a casual pre-game at Gold Rush before strolling over to Exit/In to catch the last bit of Bear in Heaven's synth-y, washed-out, psychedelic, swelling drone. We soon discovered that all of Exit/In's proceedings had been delayed 45 minutes because of a mix-up regarding the venue's published "door" time versus their announced "bands start" time.

Did you watch the Grammy nomination show? Me neither. After the tooth-pulling scene in Rudolph, I knew it was going to be way too much for my delicate constitution to hear the Black Eyed Peas get nominated for anything other than banishment to a spice mine on Charon. Nashville's usual power players of '09 did snap up some attention, though. Paramore got nominated for "Decode," off the soundtrack for that fangst-ridden movie about the girl in an abusive relationship with a glittery depress

I'm cold. U2?I don't know if you've noticed, but it's been pretty goddamn cold lately. Or at least it has been for our delicate Southern sensibilities (that's code for saying we're wimps when it comes to the cold). Instead of starting a fire in your trash can to keep warm, you might want to consider hitting one of these shows instead: Glenn Danzig's Benefit Show for the Needy Indeedy feat. • Golden Nugget: Black Eyed Peas Cover Kings of Leon

While it remains to be seen whether the Kings of Leon will ever again play at the Sommet Center, there is apparently a good chance that their "Billy Jean"-like juggernaut of a hit "Sex on Fire" will get an encore performance there courtesy of the Black Eyed Peas, when they come to the arena Feb. 12. Posted above is a video of the multicultural "retarded" rabble-rousers covering the KOL "classic" at this year's Glastonbury festival. Unfortunately, this brief low-quality clip is the only viral

I'm cold. U2?Saturday: Tristen w/Larissa Maestro, Chad Dickinson & Charlie Murphey at Downtown Presbyterian Church. While you're art crawlin', there's a free show at the church on 5th. It's also being recorded by Welcome to 1979 on analog tape. Steve Albini is stoked. Kyle Andrews w/Heypenny, Plumb & Will Morgan Holland at the Listening Room. Photos by Brad Hodge Check out the slideshow for more photos. For 90-odd minutes Monday night at Bridgestone Arena, Muse gave a crash course in Arena Rock 101, at a time when such education is so direly needed. What started with many asking how Muse became big enough to play a venue that size ended with several thousand people wondering how they ever fit themselves into Mercy Lounge to see the same band years ago.
