  • The Spin: Of Montreal at Cannery Ballroom

Kevin Barnes. Check out the slideshow for more photos. We had hoped The Fiery Furnaces would remain on tour with Of Montreal through their Nashville date, but alas, they only played the Florida leg of the Skeletal Lamping tour, so we were left with just Fire Zuave as openers. And after peeping a bit of Zuave's music on the Interwebs and finding ourselves relatively unimpressed, we felt comfortable strolling in toward the end of their set. The crowd was wall-to-wall and decked out in perhaps

  • Flaming Lips, N.E.R.D. to Headline Rites of Spring

Photo from Vandy SPEARI honestly don't know if anything will top the brain-trip I went through last year, as the night transitioned between Feist and Lil' Jon (The Spin was there, too), but here you have it: The Flaming Lips and N.E.R.D. are playing Vanderbilt's annual reason to own a cooler with wheels, Rites of Spring. The lawn-trashing happens Apr. 17-18. I never thought the Lips would be as big a deal as they are now, but hey, good for them. I guess I'm pretty glad I was able to catch them

  • Tennessee State Rock Song!

Make sure it has lots of quarter notes. As you've probably already heard, the state legislature of Oklahoma has chosen The Flaming Lips' "Do You Realize" as the state rock song. (Yeah, I read it on P4K.) And to think, our own legislature is considering guns on playgrounds--but not at the capitol, of course--when they could be voting on what awesome rock song best represents our state. (Do You Realize we already have a bicentennial rap?) For your consideration, here are a few Cream suggestions

  • I Heart Santigold, While Also Hearting Breakfast at Sulimay's Heartily

I can honestly say I'm more excited about seeing Santigold tonight at Rites of Spring than I've been about any other show this year. (Sorry, JEFF.) I'm going to check out the merch table, and if there's a shirt that makes it look like you've just barfed gold all over yourself, I might buy it. I also happen to love the web series Breakfast at Sulimay's, even if Ann--currently my favorite music critic--summed up Santi's song "L.E.S. Artistes" by saying, "That sucked." Well, Ann, I disagree, but

  • The Flaming Lips and N.E.R.D.: Rites of Spring Saturday 4/18/09

Photos by Steve Cross See the slideshows for more photos: N.E.R.D.; The Flaming Lips. After an exhausting but utterly fulfilling Record Store Day spent shop-hopping and early drinking, we checked in at Vanderbilt to catch the tail end of Saturday night's Rites of Spring happenings. Once we'd determined that the spare press pass we hoped to finagle for our date was indeed confirmed, we crossed campus to catch N.E.R.D. just as they kicked off their set. Pharrell Williams, clearly heavily adored

  • Nashville Cream 8 off 8th Finale: '90s Night, Tonight!

I could have picked a Super-Fuzz, but whatever. Man, the motherfuckin' '90s. How you remember them depends, of course, on how old you were. Maybe you were in elementary school and just getting into Saved by The Bell when Sinead O'Connor ripped up that picture of the Pope, or maybe you were already working as a waitress rollin' your silver at O'Charley's when Cobain bit it. If you were already in college when Columbine shocked the nation, then it meant a lot less to your everyday school ex

Built to Spill's new album There Is No Enemy (their first in three years after 2006's You In Reverse) comes out Oct. 6. They've scheduled a fall tour that kicks off in Oregon in 10 days, taking these masters of bendy, heartfelt bombast down the West Coast and to states like Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. States just like ours, only in cities that will make us feel like shit when we find out that they won't be playing in Nashville, but Memphis. What's Memphis ever done for anybody? I kid. Hey, wo

  • Super Secret Special Guest to Appear at Tonight's 8 off 8th [Who Can It Be Now?]

Will it be as epic as this was? If you follow the Mercy Lounge on Twitter then you've undoubtedly noticed their recent daily tweets alluding to a super-secret ninth band who are presumably flying into town to play a super-secret set to close tonight's 8 off 8th festivities. By examining these tweets we know that this is a band who: ...hate Kings of Leon but love to make you dance... is very popular with boys and has had over 7 bassists...will perform at next month's All Tomorrow's Parties...h

  • Sam & Ruby's Debut Named 'Best Album of the Year' by Associated Press

Scene intern Lance Conzett contributed this post. There's a certain point in December where "best of" lists hit critical mass and our brains start turning to mush at the sight of yet another indie rock slapfight over which Radiohead album released this decade is the king of popular music until 2019. But then a major news organization will throw out a list so bizarre that it demands our attention. The Associated Press released their picks for the best records of the year today and, inexplicably

  • Working on My Year-End List: 40 of the Year's Best Records

Back in June, I blogged that I was already beginning to consider my options for albums of the year. The annual Pazz & Jop Poll--which is half the reason I started this blog--is hosted by our former overlords at Village Voice, and they've again asked for our opinions regarding 2009's strongest albums. Sweet of them, considering we at the Scene aren't a part of the corporate family anymore--though I'm not entirely sure they realize that.

  • 2009: Grimey's Top Sellers and Staff Picks

If you're one of the few people who actually paid for records in 2009, then you likely paid for them at Grimey's New & Preloved Music--Nashville's favorite record shop. If there's one group of geeks in this town who trump us with their music knowledge, then it's easily the staff at this beloved local establishment. Hell, Doyle Davis probably knows more about Guided by Voices than Mr. Miyagi knows about karate--Bee Thousand is the crane kick of indie-rock, BTW. This morning, Grimey's "indi

  • Bonnaroo Lineup News: The Flaming Lips to Cover Dark Side of the Moon, Paul Simon a Go and Paul McCartney Rumored

In case you haven't heard, everyone's favorite fearless freaks of the festival circuit, The Flaming Lips, will perform Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon in a late-night set at Bonnaroo 2010. This according to Lips frontman -- and Raffi of indie-rock -- Wayne Coyne, who yesterday revealed his bands intentions to Spinner, claiming: ...we're gonna do it at Bonnaroo at the midnight slot, the first night... We do a Flaming Lips set then starting about 2:30 we do this 'Dark Side of the Moon'

  • Bonnaroo 2010 Lineup: Jay-Z, The Flaming Lips, John Fogerty, Weezer ...

Today's the day that the Bonnaroo lineup "unfolds," as we were told would happen. The unfolding sure feels a lot like a trickle, but let's not get caught up in semantics, right? There's also supposed to be a big "unveiling" at 11 a.m. our time, so we shall be on the lookout for that. Meanwhile, we'll update this post throughout the day as we find stuff out. It looks like artists' sites are the source of some initial confirmations, as is the case with the Fogerty. Here's what we know so

  • Warner Doesn't Want You Streaming Their Music for Free Anymore

Sometimes I think it wouldn't be a terrible idea for major record labels and organizations like the RIAA to appoint a Net-savvy 15-year-old to their board of directors. That way, they'd have someone to tell them whenever one of their decisions was laughable or antiquated or, in this case, possibly questionable/impertinent. The BBC reports that Warner Music Group will no longer be licensing its songs to websites like Last.fm, Pandora and Grooveshark for free streaming. Warner CEO Edgar Bro
