  • Mercy Announces Winter Concert Series: Casio Fears the Worst

As an official casualty of the Summer of Dreamz, I've warned you all several times against tempting fate and trying to control your destinies by redubbing various seasons with names ending in unnecessary Zs. And yet, it appears some of you simply refuse to listen. In spite of my many cautionary tales, Mercy Lounge, in cooperation with Sweetwater 420, has chosen to title its upcoming winter concert series "Winter of Dreamz." Having witnessed firsthand the kind of carnage that can ensue when you

  • Cowboy Jack Clement or Else: It's Thursday

If Cowboy Jack Clement ever needed to apply for a job, at least in this economy, his prospective employer would probably lean back in her Herman Miller chair, rub her chin amusedly, and say, "Mister, I don't know what to tell you. You're just overqualified." From Michael McCall's Critic's Pick: He produced Jerry Lee Lewis' first Sun Records hits, brought out the best in his buddy Johnny Cash, convinced Chet Atkins to sign Charley Pride and produced Waylon Jennings' landmark album Dreamin' My

  • Weekend Round-Up: My Stabby Valentine Style Part 1

Gah, I've been itchin' to do some awful Photoshop all week. Now, I don't know about all that bunk regarding Friday the 13th being bad luck. Sounds like garbage to me. We're facing a very strong evening of rock tonight, my friends. Near perfect, in fact. MEEMAW (final show??) w/The Tits, Fork Hunts & Wes and the Illegals at The End. Bring your freakin' party cummerbunds. So vulgar. So loud. So epic. The Basement Championship Series feat. Oblio, Hotpipes & O, Don Piano. First of all, Hotpipes

  • Tommy and the Whale Call It Quits?

Movement Nashville's Dean Shortland sheds a single tear.Anyone who went to The Basement to check out KinderCastle last night probably noticed that Tommy and the Whale were absent from the bill, with Space Capone headlining instead. There's a pretty good reason for that: Rumor has it that T and the W have broken up. No confirmation on their 'Space or anything yet, but the rumors are relatively substantiated. And "relatively substantiated" is good enough for us around here. RIP, T & the Dub.

First of all, watch the video above 'cuz it's got an adorable kitten trapped on a Technics 1200--maybe the greatest combination of nature and technology ever captured in flash video. Secondly, this Saturday is Record Store Day! Woo-hooooo!!! Live music, nerdy vinyl and beer! Record Shopping! Food! Beer! I'm too excited! To form complete sentences! Kittehs on turntables! • DPAUL Remixes Shoot the Mountain Track; STM EP Release May 16

They could certainly do worse for openers. So we gave you a tiny taste of Shoot the Mountain's forthcoming eponymous EP last month, but we've got a little something extra for you in honor of their release show this Saturday at The Basement. It's a bona fide DPAUL remix of STM's "Islands." Listen: Shoot the Mountain - "Islands (DPAUL Remix)" [MP3] For those unfamiliar/unable to decipher that cleverly concocted deejay moniker, DPAUL is Privates frontman/future trivia star Dave Paulson's remixin'

  • Locals Divided Over Final Bonnaroo 8 off 8th, May 18 at Mercy Lounge

They wouldn't play nice, so I forced 'em all into a mega-flyer. As things continue to get heated in the race down the Road to Bonnaroo, there has been one display of altruism betwixt local bands: The boys of Tommy and the Whale have signed all of their fans over to Heypenny. As you'll no doubt recall, T and the Dub disbanded several weeks ago, and they recently finalized negotiations that left their devoted fans in the Heypenny camp. The transaction is documented in this photograph, as well as

  • Marching Band Parking Lot: Road to Bonnaroo at Mercy Lounge

If you've ever wanted to play the "marching band" drinking game, now would be the time. As the earnest, full-of-love dude at 5:03 will tell you, the final installation in Mercy Lounge's Road to Bonnaroo 8 off 8th series was about "pullinow allda stops to getchur Bonnaroo spot." And thanks to the folks at You Tell Concerts, we have yet another confirmation that Heypenny was quite beloved on Monday evening. Though technically, Space Capone received the most audience votes. But what else can we

Local funk troupe Space Capone may have narrowly missed punching their ticket to Bonnaroo, but they did land a sweet spot jammin' at the pool--which, when Sweaty Pits McJune rolls around, might feel like a better prize. Once again, the Gaylord Opryland hotel is putting on their Poolapalooza series--which last year featured bunch of bands and will this year feature even more bands! The weekly happening begins at the Cascades pool at 6 p.m., with music starting at 7 p.m. There is apparently "fr

Want to hear that sleazy honkin' sax riff on "Brown Sugar" played by the guy who first laid it down? You'll get your chance Oct. 10 at the Germantown Street Festival, when Stones saxman Bobby Keys joins The Long Players to recreate the Sticky Fingers LP in its entirety. (And you were hoping they'd do U2's October. 'Tis the season.) Confirmed guest vocalists include Jonell Mosser and Danny Flowers. The LPs cap what sounds like a pretty cool music lineup for the neighborhood festival's main sta

  • Banged in the Jazzola: Anonymous Liar My New Hero

As far as I'm concerned, one emerging artist has already come out on top during this year's festival. The anonymous Next Big Nashville prankster included a poem in one of his/her (probably his) hilariously uninformative emails of misinformation and lies that I think really sums up what a musician--particularly a Nashville musician--goes through in times like these: oh city with horned tower promising gold to those who come to its gates reaping the past to disown the present a bubble of hope ri

  • Mandatory Blog Disclosure Post

As you may have heard, today's the day bloggers are supposed to start admitting on their blogs when they're getting free stuff in exchange for blogging. Mommy bloggers are to blame for this. Since it's understood that we get review copies of albums and that those albums are property of the record label and must be surrendered upon pain of death, and have the UPC codes scratched out so that even a shit-poor music writer can't turn around and get $2 in store credit for something the label

Click to enlarge this overwhelming biz!Has it really been seven years since that wacky crew of bra-hams down on Cannery Row first began staging shows? Our calendars and our swiftly deteriorating livers tell us yes, so we might as well celebrate. Between Saturday, Jan. 16, and Saturday, Jan. 23, Mercy Lounge and Cannery Ballroom will be hosting several local-talent-imbued blowouts, and every single one of them is free. In the summer they call him "Bronze" instead of "Gold."How 'bout this weather we're having? Srsly!? Anyhow, our lovely and talented art director Elizabeth Jones recommended that we start combining all of the weekend's listings and putting them up first thing Friday as one big post. She claims that this will help "old people" such as her 27-year-old self better map out their weekends. What do you think? Better? Worse? Do you care? Is anyone reading? Whatever. • Road to Bonnaroo 2010 Lineups and Schedule

A few people got a little hot under the collar when we announced which bands will be competing in this year's Road to Bonnaroo shows -- after all, there is so very much at stake! This year there are four (not three) nights of all-out competition -- and thus four Nashville bands will win their way to an outdoor gig in the proximity of 80,000 uncleanly people in Manchester. Now it's time to start the speculation all over again, as the actual lineups have come across our electronic threshold and ar

  • On Nashville Side Projects and/or the Lack Thereof

So yesterday I noticed you all slapping on your caption caps in an effort to win tickets to see Tobacco -- the side/solo project from the Black Moth Super Rainbow frontman. Basically, this got me thinking: Hasn't Nashville been a little shy on its own side projects lately? I mean, sure, solo/side projects started by members of relatively more successful bands are basically like reality TV shows: gloriously self-indulgent, rarely at all original or astounding, and always in excess of the actua

Winning caption goes here. We all know everyone loves a good caption contest, and the prize in this case is bigger than usual, if you know what I mean. Well, actually, what I mean is it's bigger than usual. Mercy Lounge is throwing down not one, not two, but FIVE tickets -- seven if you count the fact that one of them is a three-day pass -- to upcoming shows at the Lounge. (That's over $60 worth.) Those shows are: * Yacht Rock Revue & Space Capone (Mar. 19) * Hockey w/Solid Gold & The Postelle

These are people to be jealous of.From the Department of Lucky Fucks: Nashville's best smooth-rockin' and hard-groovin' party band have just been invited to take place in a real-life reenactment of one of my wet dreams. No, I'm not talking about Space Capone or a Chat Roulette convo between myself and Bruce Springsteen. I'm talking about Tim Chad & Sherry, and how the reunited Pavement have just tapped them play the All Tomorrow's Parties festival they're curating in Minehead, U.K. With

  • Weekend Round-Up: Spring Chicken Style

Hey, it's gonna be spring this weekend! Like, real, sunny, warm, nice springy spring. Like, pretty soon it's gonna be so damn hot all the time people can complain about that instead of complaining about how cold/rainy/snowy/wintry-mixy/cloudy/mild it is! Now, I'm not the Photoshop ace that D. Patrizio is, and I'd also rather not start my day by cutting Gold's head out of a Facebook pic and pasting it on a baby chick emerging from a golden egg. Not that I thought of doing that or anythin
