  • Will Obama’s Win Mean Big Gains for Nashville’s Unions?

It was one of the least talked about issues of the election. It also may be one of the most transformative. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce considered it so dangerous it spent $30 million at the end of the campaign to stop Barack Obama. But within the next year, it will likely be coming to a workplace near you. It’s called the card check system, and it may prove to be the rebirth of the American union movement, dramatically changing the way organizing drives are conducted. Under current rule

  • Lights Out! DrinkHaus Observes Earth Hour

On March 28, if you a see a glowing yellow-and-white beacon just north of the pitch-black cityscape of downtown Nashville, that's probably DrinkHaus. Owner Kat Roos is observing Earth Hour by turning out the lights and holding a candlelit party in her lemon-colored coffee shop. DrinkHaus' (electric) lights will go out from 8 to 9 p.m. That's a half-hour before the rest of downtown goes dark, so people can still see to gather. Roos will bake up a batch of goodies to sample, and she's gathering

  • Tennessee GOP Establishment Embraces Tea Party Protesters

Nashville's Tax Day Tea Party is only about an hour away, and Pith is all atwitter with anticipation. The Politico's Ben Smith writes today about the reluctance of the Republican establishment to join the wackos in the Tea Party revolution. What's up with that? In Tennessee, Republicans have no such fussy qualms about hanging out with angry nutjobs. Ron Ramsey, Zach Wamp and Marsha Blackburn, just to name three state GOP leaders, have embraced the Tea Party protesters in press releases. Wamp s

  • Cooper: the Scrooge of the Health Care Debate

Jim Cooper is the star of a favorable report in the Economist headlined "What now for Obamacare?" Here's how the article begins: "It's a lot easier to be Santa than Scrooge," harrumphs Jim Cooper. The congressman from Tennessee is complaining about the health-reform plan unveiled in July by the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives. He thinks it is a populist initiative that will end up fueling rather than curbing America's runaway health inflation. Such tough talk would

No stranger to the pages of Pith, Liberadio(!) has been informing, entertaining and infuriating Nashville listening audiences for five years now. Each Monday morning from 7 to 9 a.m. on WRVU-91.1 FM, co-hosts Mary Mancini and Freddie O'Connell offer an alternative perspective to the glut of right-wing talk radio shows clogging up the airwaves. It has been a big week for the plaintiffs in the trial of the federal lawsuit against Nashville's new student assignment plan. Let's review: Expert witnesses testified the plan isolates hundreds more children by race and socioeconomic status and contradicts decades of social science on how to teach poor urban kids. That research shows students learn less in schools where poverty is concentrated. That's because teachers are overwhelmed by all the problems these children face--poor health,

  • Jim Cooper: Mr. Compromise!

In a surprise as the House opens debate on health care reform, Rep. Jim Cooper has announced he's deserting many of his Blue Dog buddies to vote yes. I will vote yes on H.R. 3962. My vote is not an endorsement of all the provisions of the bill because I find much of the bill to be deeply flawed. There is little chance that H.R. 3962 will become law due to the long legislative process. My reason for voting yes is to advance the cause of health care reform by forcing the Senate to act. Witho

  • Chamber of Commerce Cash and the Student Rezoning Plan

Karen JohnsonIn the student rezoning case in federal court, Metro's lawyers pop out of their seats with objections at the mere mention of the possibility the Chamber of Commerce might have tried to influence the school board. It's as if they actually think the judge will believe that the Chamber didn't push for the new student assignment plan. Please. The Chamber gave great wads of campaign cash to supporters of the rezoning plan. It even endorsed and funded an obscure candidate named Co
