  • Mates of State Tonight at Exit/In

Mom and Dad rock. Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel are married. They have two daughters, Magnolia and June. They're also in a band called Mates of State. (Their first album, My Solo Project, is still one of my favorites. I once carried the LP around all night just so that when I eventually met up with a friend, I could play it for her.) I mention the kids because even though MoS aren't exactly Radiohead, income-wise, they bring their little ones on tour with them, a fact that is both adorable an

  • We Jam Econo: More Local Rock Bargains

In this increasingly brutal economic climate, a good bargain is getting harder and harder to find. And who has the time to look for deals when you're out there busting your hump for another paycheck? Well, I do. Which is why I'll continue to report the best local rock-related deals and steals I catch wind of. Local love-to-be-hated, self-described "soul punk" outfit The Armed Forces are feeling the crunch as much as anyone, which is why tonight, during their show at The End with Eastern Block

  • Twestival: Donate a Song, Give a Tweet

As you may already know, Nashville is one of 175 or so cities around the world hosting a Twestival, which is either a worldwide tweet-up or a lot of simultaneous tweet-ups, depending on how you look at it. The purpose of the Feb. 12 event, aside from the social aspect, is to raise money for charity: water, a "non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations." Musicians, there's also a chance to get your music out in front of an audience and also do a good turn.

  • Annuals, Jessica Lea Mayfield at Exit/In 3/6/09

Photo by Steve Cross See slideshows for more photos: Annuals; Jessica Lea Mayfield. The Spin was disappointed that we were feeling under the weather last Friday, one of the first nice days of the year, mostly because we decided to be a grown-up about it and forgo drinking as we hit up Exit/In to see hard-touring and precocious North Carolina popsters Annuals. We walked in as opener What Laura Says were finishing up, so we had only one impression: harmonicas. Great timing! The spring-like war

  • Coldplay Play Sommet Center June 6

If I'd included the real pictures of the real band members would you have known the difference?Guess where the Spin is going to be on June 6. Being that we want to make trade fair, more than likely we'll be at the Sommet Center. That's where England's not-so-newest-anymore hitmakers Coldplay will be performing on their--now extended--Viva La Vida tour. Despite my undying love for recent Cream punching bag U2, I am NOT a Coldplay fan--although it's nice to know that Radiohead could have been the

  • Jamie Foxx v. Miley Cyrus: Verbal Gangbang on the Foxxhole

In case you haven't already heard it, above is a clip from Jamie Foxx's Sirius show, Foxxhole Radio, in which serious shenanigans are called on Cyrus's little pout about getting snubbed by Radiohead at the Grammys.Anyway, The Tennessean's got an indignant little story from the AP characterizing the exchange between Foxx and fellow hosts as a "crude rant." Crude it may be, but also pretty funny. And it's on Sirius, so what do you expect?Foxx points out the gummy nature of her smile. "Let me get

Photo by Lance ConzettSHSP's Derrick BrownBy now you've all either put together or witnessed first-hand that the secret guest of Monday night's 9 off 8th at Mercy Lounge was notorious tongue-in-cheek body-pop troupe Spring Hill Spider Party. Not Kings of Leon. Not Radiohead. Not Creed. Spring Hill Spider Party. For fans of SHSP and regulars at Mercy, it was basically just a pretty funny little surprise. For others...well, we'll just say not everyone was doubled over with laughter. Spider

  • Hail to the Brief: Radiohead to Possibly Release Only Singles. Others to Follow Suit?

Talk to the hand, conventional album formats. From The New York Times comes the announcement that fearless pioneers of future music Radiohead are rocking the boat once more. According to the Times, Thom Yorke's interview with The Believer (full interview only available through purchase) indicates that they'll no longer be recording LPs, instead focusing on the Modern Internet User's favorite bite-sized consumable: the single. So, when Mr. Yorke announced a change of course for the band, saying i

Sweaters! What Nashville band is having their songs remixed by Justin Timberlake, Pharrell, Mark Ronson, Kenna, Linkin Park (!) and Lykke Li? I guess this isn't a blind item, so you already know. Still. Lykke Li? "It's amazing to hear your song played by these people who are so creative," says he of the tins and skins, Nathan Followill. Must be. The brothers F are also releasing a live DVD this fall, which was filmed--where else?--in England, land of superior musical taste. Unlike a certain oth

  • But How Popular Are Muse, Really?

Look, I don't walk around this world pretending to be some kind of genius about music. I'm not Chuck Klosterman. But most days I feel like I have a pretty decent grip on good vs. bad, popular vs. unpopular. Not today! Today all I can think about is the weird truth that Muse is going to play at the Sommet Center next March. Am I only person confused about this? John Mayer and the Black Eyed Peas playing the Sommet Center, I get. Those acts are so famous, even my mother knows what a will.i.am is.

  • 2009: Grimey's Top Sellers and Staff Picks

If you're one of the few people who actually paid for records in 2009, then you likely paid for them at Grimey's New & Preloved Music--Nashville's favorite record shop. If there's one group of geeks in this town who trump us with their music knowledge, then it's easily the staff at this beloved local establishment. Hell, Doyle Davis probably knows more about Guided by Voices than Mr. Miyagi knows about karate--Bee Thousand is the crane kick of indie-rock, BTW. This morning, Grimey's "indi
