  • Top 10 Indie Rock Albums of 2008

In 2008, independent rock returned to the underground, where it belongs. Given the grand catastrophe that is today's record industry, most major-label executives don't have the time or energy to convince music fans they might like something a little out of the ordinary. They're too busy recycling variations on what were once sure things while desperately searching for career exit strategies that don't involve tall buildings, open windows and running leaps. As a result, fringier artists have ha

Remember that hot minute-and-a-half when Annuals were the biggest deal in the history of the indie rock Internets since CYHSY? No? Maybe you were over them before you were into them; they were, after all, birthed into the public consciousness through the love canal we know as Pitchfork, which called them "some fantasy hybrid of Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Scene," and had earned more stripes toward the exalted title of "most overhyped band ever" before their debut album was

  • The Dead Weather to Tour, Play War Memorial July 30

The Dead Weather announced today that their debut album, Horehound, will be given unto us on July 14, by way of Third Man Records/Warner Brothers. As rock bands often do, the D.W. will hit the road in support of the album. (The tour is said to be "kicking off" in Louisville June 11, even though there's over a month between that show and the next one, at the 9:30 Club in D.C. on July 13.) What this means for Nashville is that The Dead Weather will bring their four pieces of "dirge rock" to our o

  • Deleted Scenes to Tour, Play The End June 1

Deleted Scenes leave their homes in the East tomorrow and make their way in our specific direction, as they head off on tour behind their album Birdseed Shirt. In addition to possessing one of the year's finest titles, the album scored an 8.0 on a particular website named after an agricultural tool. Here's a song, which serves as a pretty good demonstration of what the band does well: Deleted Scenes - "Fake IDs" [MP3] The songs seems to stumble forward over the repeating keyboard figure, the r

Fraternal favorites JEFF the Brotherhood are out on the road off and on through November, showing the nation that The White Stripes aren't the only two-piece residing in Middle Tennessee. Their current itinerary sees them going up and down both coasts and in-between with strings of dates opening for Shonen Knife and Ted Leo. They will be appearing with Israeli firestarters Monotonix at Exit/In on Oct. 17--a show that promises to be a cardiovascular romp to say the least. The band's upcom

  • The Raconteurs Nominated for CMA Award

The fucking musical event of 2009! In early 2006, a whip-smart blues musician from D-troit packed his bags, threw caution to the wind and headed Nashville-way with dreams of becoming a big ole country star in his heart. The landscape of Music City was forever changed. Today, that lofty flight of fancy has blossomed into an undeniable reality as Jack White and his wily Raconteurs have just garnered their first Country Music Association Award nomination. The band's collaboration with Ricky Skag

  • Passion Pit to Tour, Play Vanderbilt April 24

Aw.Boston-based indie popsters Passion Pit announced today they are going on a U.S. tour that includes Nashville. More specifically, they'll apparently be playing at Vanderbilt on April 24. One would assume that means an appearance at the annual Gathering of the Flip-Floppalos, Rites of Spring, but the schedule over there hasn't been updated yet, and it's a bit early for official announcements from that camp. Vandy does occasionally put on students-only shows, but this seems too close to

  • Portland Street Food Flavors Culinary Conference

If you are culinary professional -- you do something with food, for money -- you could be in the IACP, the international Association of Culinary Professionals. There are lots of food-oriented professional associations, but the IACP is the awesomest one, if only for its incredible annual conference. Just take a look at the program for this year's conference, April 20-24 in Portland, Oregon. There's more in just one day of this four-day conference than you can reasonably take in. But you c
