  • Awful Salsa

I've been eating at La Hacienda on Nolensville regularly for over five years, typically having lunch twice a week. On each visit, I tend to consume at least two small bowls of salsa by myself. Friends who eat with me know I don't share when it comes to the delicious red suspension. La Ha's salsa tends to vary with each batch. The levels of herbs or other ingredients may differ, but the flavor is OK at worst and divine at best. While it has been a little pickle-y lately, today, something was t

  • ALDI Rage: East Nashville, Meet Trader Joe's Thrifty Cousin!

East Nashville may be petitioning to get its own Trader Joe's, but on Feb. 9, at 615 Gallatin Rd., it gets the next best thing: ALDI. That sound you just heard like a whale spouting was the 37205 zipcode spitting its Starbucks in unison. ALDI? The grocery too cheap to provide complimentary shopping carts or baggers? The grocery shopped by retirees and folks on fixed incomes? The grocery stocked full of obscure brand names you'll never see at Kroger? That ALDI? Aye, that's the one. Our own C

  • Taqueria San Luis: Could This Be the Best Cheap Lunch in Nashville?

I found it. OK, I didn't really find it: it sort of came to me third-hand, from Nashville filmmaker James Clauer (congrats on the Sundance cinematography award!) by way of our own Jack Silverman. But I may have happened upon the holy grail: the mythical hole-in-the-wall taco joint where the food is both amazing and dirt cheap. Out West--in Los Angeles, in Texas--it's hardly a myth. But the taco-stand chow I've had here has been mostly serviceable, much as I love the elotes at Taqueria Dona Ter

  • Pitmaster Pat Martin Headed to the Big Apple

Patrick Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint in Nolensville was hopping this past weekend, according to diehards who waited in line and at tables for up to an hour for slow-cooked ribs and brisket. But that crowd is nothing compared to the throng that Martin plans to feed this summer at the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in New York City. As one of 14 pitmasters from around the country tapped to participate in the seventh annual barbecue fest, Martin will prepare enough whole hog and sweet pickles to feed

Check out PITH for commentary on that. We're talking BBQ. • For One Brief Moment the Belle Meade Kroger Was the Coolest Place on Earth. Maybe.

Droppin Science like Galileo dropped an orange in the produce aisle. Can you name this grocery store that was, for at least a few moments, the coolest place on Earth? I'm guessing it's the Belle Meade Kroger, since we know that Nas and The Beastie Boys were shooting a video around Centennial Park back in June. I'm gonna guess that they just drove down West End cuz they've got valet parking (at a grocery store WTF?!?) and I assume that the odds of somebody recognizing Nasty Nas and the Beasties

The highly anticipated opening of Martin's BBQ at its new spot (near the old spot) in Nolensville is reasonably firmly set for Feb. 18. Proprietor and pitmaster Pat Martin tweets: Need u for more help!!! What "throwback" colas/sodas do u want us to offer? ex. Frostie Blue Cream, Cheerwine, Sun-Drop..help us out here! For old school soft drinks, RC gets my vote. Martin's Twitter feed has an earlier tweet that ponders whether to add pork cracklins to the menu -- you can tweet a vote about that,
