  • ChaChah Hosts Monday Chef's Table

A centerpiece of ChaChah, Arnold Myint's new Spanish-flavored tapas bar on Belmont, is the long tall table at the core of the fabulously renovated house. Starting March 2, Arnold will put it to use on Monday evenings when he hosts a chef's table for the culinary adventurous. With items not always found on the menu, a ChaChah chef's table might include six courses with small plates such as spicy gambas toast with quail egg; bacalao-and-chickpea brandade; squid ink fideos; pig ear salad with mango

  • The Week In Reviews, Episode 5: Cajun Steamer Bar & Grill

(This is the fifth in a series of mini reviews published in this week's dining column.) Cajun Steamer Bar & Grill This third installment of the Birmingham-based nameplate just opened this month, so we still don't know whether it will fulfill your bayou-soaked fantasies about that fried eggplant stuffed with fish and topped with crab cream, like the one at the bygone Uglesich's in New Orleans. But the menu crawling with crawfish, overflowing with oysters and pooling with po'boys--including black

  • Take a Quiz on Sustainable Seafood

Nicki Wood It's easier to aim for the sustainable choice when you know what it is. Since we're hundreds of miles from the ocean, we can be forgiven for not being fully versed in seafood stewardship. Sierra Club has developed a seafood quiz that informs while it tests your knowledge of best seafood choices for the health of the oceans and the seafood stocks. Here's a sample question: "You feel like eating light, but still want some tasty food, so you head over to your local sushi joint. Which

  • Cajun Steamer Crawls With Crawdads

This week's dining review features Cajun Steamer, the festive New Orleans-flavored eatery in Cool Springs, which is the third in a nascent Alabama-based chain. Of all the bayou-tinged decor, the best feature at Cajun Steamer is a large plate-glass window with a view of the kitchen, where cooks trawl giant baskets of mudbugs from stainless steel steampots. Tucking into a pile of fiery-red crawdads, I couldn't help wishing I ate more crawfish, and I'll look forward to heading back out to Cajun S

  • Food Fight: Fish Sandwich Smackdown

Miro District's Market Fish Sandwich In one corner, Miro District Food & Drink's market fish sandwich ($12). In the other, 1808 Grille's Flaked Char Panino ($10.50). In a metaphor that's about to relocate from the boxing ring to the high seas faster than Mike Tyson can KO a killer whale, which fish sandwich is the Big Kahuna? First, a look at the details. 1808: A selection from 1808's so-called Panini Parlor, the flaked char comes with nearly unlimited flexibility, including a choice of bread,
