At this very moment we are within 24 hours of an initial Bonnaroo lineup announcement. My fingers are still crossed that rumors of a Springsteen appearance will be confirmed and that something very bad happens to Phish. I mean, I don't want them to get maimed or killed or anything, but if one of them were to get a really bad hangnail or something, forcing the cancellation of their tour and eliminating the possibility of (both) their Bonnaroo appearances, then I wouldn't complain. One thing I

  • Leonard Cohen to Play Tennessee Performing Arts Center Nov. 5

When Leonard Cohen skipped Nashville on his last tour, I was...well, I wasn't surprised, exactly--people skip our city all the time--but I was kind of surprised, in addition to being more disappointed than I usually am. After all, Cohen recorded Songs From a Room and Songs of Love and Hate here (1968 and 1970, respectively, in sessions with Bob Johnston that included Charlie Daniels). Yeah, people record all kinds of places, so that's not necessarily a big pull later on. But Cohen actually lived

  • Leonard Cohen Tickets On Sale Aug. 3

We've got a little more info to report about the Leonard Cohen show Nov. 5 at TPAC's Jackson Hall. Tickets will go on sale to the public Monday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. Prices have not been released, but the Cleveland and Asheville shows are selling for $47 to $250, so I would expect that to be about what you'll be paying here. There is a limit of eight tickets per household, so if you've got $1,900 lying around, you'll have to stop there. Pre-sale is July 31, the kind of thing that AEG email list

  • A Record a Day: The First 101

Back in June, I embarked on an attempt to listen to--and hopefully review, to some extent--365 records in as many days. I encountered a fair amount of criticism in regard to my approach and just how retentive I could be on such a rigorous sonic diet. All criticisms were duly noted, and I admit my experiment has its limitations. But now I'm at 101 records in 102 days, and I've learned a hell of a lot about listening to albums, describing albums and putting important albums into a larger cultural

  • Leonard Cohen Tonight at TPAC

Looks like there are still a few tickets left for tonight's Leonard Cohen show at TPAC. Get 'em here. Speaking of the greatest Jewish Zen monk songwriter in Canadian history, there's a new biography of Cohen coming out soon, and, according to Kevin Richards over at American Songwriter, it gives some details about a new album due out some time in the next year. Better yet, TwentyFourBit reports at least one new song making its way into the repertoire at recent shows--a Chicago performance of "t

  • Leonard Cohen at TPAC's Jackson Hall, 11/5/09

Steve Cross Check out the slideshow for more photos. When Leonard Cohen took the stage at TPAC's Jackson Hall last night, he and his band probably could have soaked up the rapturous applause for half an hour, but they went right to work, opening with a breezy rendition of "Dance Me to the End of Love." Sitting in our snug theater seats (an unusual comfort for us), we needed about three songs before we got our heads around the fact that yes, we were actually here. In the same room with Leonard

A sewage plant? Burn!According to this NBC report, a Knoxville attorney has proposed that the city rename one of its yucky-water plants the Lane Kiffin Sewage Center. Aw. Drew McElroy, the lawyer who's making good use of his time by putting this proposal forward, says (apparently unironically), "Knowing what we know now, I don't think anybody is angry he's gone." I don't know how many of you watched the Haiti telethon Friday night, but I have to say: I haven't hated Sting this little in years! (The presence of ?uestlove on drums might have had something to do with it, but damn if "Driven to Tears" didn't sound like a smart song.) I had to really fight the automatic barf/punch reflex when I saw Kid Rock singing with Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban, too, because, after all, he was doing a good thing. A good thing. I had to keep saying that. I was disapp
