  • Pete Yorn to Play Cannery Ballroom July 16

Anyone disappointed that Pete Yorn's stint as the opening act for Coldplay ends June 4--two days before the band hits the Sommet Center with Kaiser Chiefs in tow--can take solace in the news announced today that Yorn will come to Nashville and headline The Cannery Ballroom on July 16. Yorn will be touring behind his latest album Back and Fourth, due out June 23, and with the services of a new band: Joey Kennedy on keys, Scott Seiver on drums and Jonny Polonsky, Mark Noseworthy and Zak Schaffer o

  • Knock, Knock? Who's There? Banana-Seeker.

A Houston, Texas, advertising agency called and emailed a couple of days ago. The art department somehow found a photo of slightly overripe bananas on my blog, Tupperware Avalanche, and wanted to use it. Turns out, they're an ad agency to the oil-and-gas industry with a client that buys assets off the books of such companies. My bananas were the ideal image for the copy, "Assets getting a little ripe? Maybe it's time to make some bread." It's true that I'm easily amused, but damn! That's a fu

  • American Bang To Tour With The Pretenders

I'm not sure if I'm the only one to notice, but it seems like as they both get older Chrissy Hynde and Tom Petty look more and more alike. Anyhow, the guys in American Bang are about to see the resemblance, if there really is any, first hand. Starting Jan. 29, they will embark on a month long tour with the rock 'n' roll hall of famers. The closest show to Nashville is on Feb. 13 in Cincinnati. If you want to see the American Bangsters without making that trek than you can catch them for free

  • Annuals to Play Exit/In Mar. 6

Remember that hot minute-and-a-half when Annuals were the biggest deal in the history of the indie rock Internets since CYHSY? No? Maybe you were over them before you were into them; they were, after all, birthed into the public consciousness through the love canal we know as Pitchfork, which called them "some fantasy hybrid of Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, and Broken Social Scene," and had earned more stripes toward the exalted title of "most overhyped band ever" before their debut album was

  • Texas to Nashville: Ganja Wagon Busted

Cops beware! There's been an escalation in the eminently sensible, entirely winnable war on drugs. See that old guy with the glasses and the receding hairline driving a Winnebago? Yeah, he's the newest vector.Cops pulled over 61-year-old Jakie Spencer and Jennifer Robinson, 27, on I-40 just west of downtown for tailgating. When a police dog named Mario's sniffer picked up the pungent scent of bud emanating from somewhere in the RV, a search turned up 336 pounds in bricks inside the luggage compa

  • Deleted Scenes to Tour, Play The End June 1

Deleted Scenes leave their homes in the East tomorrow and make their way in our specific direction, as they head off on tour behind their album Birdseed Shirt. In addition to possessing one of the year's finest titles, the album scored an 8.0 on a particular website named after an agricultural tool. Here's a song, which serves as a pretty good demonstration of what the band does well: Deleted Scenes - "Fake IDs" [MP3] The songs seems to stumble forward over the repeating keyboard figure, the r

Two's a trend, right? First Paramore, now Kings of Leon rock open those platinum gates, for so long rusted shut for any rock act out of Music City. Perhaps it's time to consider the Nashville Curse broken forever. Who'd've thunk it? From the release: RCA Records is proud to announce the RIAA certified platinum status of Kings of Leon's fourth studio album Only By The Night. This is the first platinum record for the band in the United States. This fall, the Grammy Award-winning band will embark

  • Road Trip to Memphis: Built to Spill at Minglewood Hall Oct. 21

Built to Spill's new album There Is No Enemy (their first in three years after 2006's You In Reverse) comes out Oct. 6. They've scheduled a fall tour that kicks off in Oregon in 10 days, taking these masters of bendy, heartfelt bombast down the West Coast and to states like Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. States just like ours, only in cities that will make us feel like shit when we find out that they won't be playing in Nashville, but Memphis. What's Memphis ever done for anybody? I kid. Hey, wo

  • Fall Dates, Fresh Vid: Those Darlins, 'Red Light Love'

Have a look at the new video for "Red Light Love" from Those Darlins. This one happens to be my favorite track from their eponymous debut record. Just, you know, for the record. It was illustrated and directed by Jessi Darlin, with additional artwork by fellow Darlin Nikki and male Darlin Sheriff Lin. Animation and editing by Teddy Gage. For a rousing game of "Name That Nashville Rock 'n' Roll Proponent," have a careful look at the 3:00 mark. I spotted illustrated depictions of Kindergarten Ci
