  • Anvil at The Belcourt 5/23/09

Eric England Check out the slideshow for more photos. As a rule, The Spin does enjoy standing in lines. But when we saw the humanity-snake already twisting its way around the corner of 21st and Belcourt Saturday night, we were surpisingly psyched about it because we knew that meant The Anvil Experience had sold out--and frankly, anything less would have been a let-down. It's been a while since we saw a movie with a packed house, or a band in a movie theater, but this was probably the first ti

Ghostfinger, And the Relatives & Uncle Skeleton, Saturday, 30th at Mercy Lounge.) Shot Through the Heart: Bows and Arrows get a lot of things right on their latest, 1010 Eaton Street. (Playing Monday, 1st at The End w/Au Revoir Simone, The Antlers & Deleted Scenes.) Actual Air: At the U.S. Air Guitar Championships, faking it is the onl

  • On the Cover: Wild Ones: Three Hot Acts Present a New Breed of Female Songwriter

Eric EnglandThis week's cover story is a look at a current breed of female songwriters who've cropped up on the local rock scene in the last few years. I focus on three acts you've heard a lot about if you've been following the Cream's musical crushes--Caitlin Rose, Tristen Gaspadarek and Those Darlins. For those who haven't paid much attention, these are more than good-lookin' ladies with pretty voices. Each of them adds a fresh take on her own revivalist brand of pop, folk or country. They'r

  • Next Big Nashville 2009: Don't You (Forget to Get Out This Weekend)

Eric EnglandTwo down, two to go. If you're anything like the beer bottle-biting, drink-spilling, cigarette-dropping and otherwise party-overdrive whoopin'-it-uppers I ran into last night, you've got some convalescing to do and some acetaminophen intake to attend to this morning before starting all over again. And we will start all over again. If you don't already have a glossy ish at your fingertips, here's your guide to our guide to Next Big Nashville: Friday: The Black Angels, Cortney Tidwel

  • Best of Nashville 2009: Music

Eric EnglandMia CalderonThis year's Best of Nashville issue is upon us, and it weighs about four pounds. Turn to page 66 and you'll find our picks for the best in music. Latin-Electro-Popster Mia Calderon leads off the section, which covers everything from Bonnaroo to Your Mom's Favorite Mixtape. Then there's also the Readers' Poll, which is exactly what it sounds like. I'm not at all surprised that Jack White captured readers' hearts and clicks for Best Local Music Celebrity, considering that

  • Flytes of Fluffy Stuff

Eric EnglandChefs Jen Franzen, Erica Waksmunski and Ashley QuickThis week's dining review features Flyte World Dining & Wine, which, like a fine wine, appears to be improving with age. Of all the flights of fancy on my recent visit, one soared above the rest: Hot Smoked Cocoa. Pastry chef Erica Waksmunski smokes the cocoa powder, which infuses the thick warm drink with the woodsy smell of a campfire among the pines. Served with a bruleed fluff of housemade marshmallow and housemade Grah

  • YK Records, Jemina Pearl and More: Inside This Week's Music Section

Eric EnglandKing of Convenience: Michael Eades' web-savvy DIY label YK Records bridges the physical-digital gap. (YK previously on Nashville Cream: Codaphonic's Edison's Rival; Start Your Own Record Label, Part 1 and Part 2; Uncle Skeleton and Pancho Chumley remixed, Shaboi and Slowmotions.) All She's Got: Love for Nashville, hate for Nashville -- Jemina Pearl harbors them both. "I've always felt like Nashville hasn't been very kind to me. Seems like they've been really kind to my bandma

  • Smiling Elephant Makes Eyes Water With Joy

Eric EnglandA cool Thai iced tea or coffee is handy when trying the pad thai at the delightful Smiling Elephant on Eight Avenue. This week's dining review features The Smiling Elephant, the twee Thai restaurant on Eighth Avenue owned by the uncle of ChaChah's Arnold Myint and brother of International Market's Patti Myint. (Can you imagine a family dinner with this restaurant dynasty?) I love the Smiling Elephant. In fact, virtually my only criticism was that some of the foods -- green cur

  • Ashley Monroe, Tyler Bryant, Daniel Pujol, Ya Za and More: 10 Artists to Watch in 2010 [This Week's Cover]

Eric EnglandA new year means a new batch of local music, and a new cycle of ups and outs, collaborations and exeunts, daring pairings and hot new heat. To celebrate what's on the way, we dedicated this week's Scene cover story to taking a look at 10 artists to watch in 2010. Leading the Nashville charge we've got guitar wunderkind and American Bang-jangler Tyler Bryant, No. 1 hit songwriter and Brendan Benson collaborator Ashley Monroe, indie king/fever queen duo Kurt Wagner and Cortney

  • Pizza and Pudding: Diarrhea Planet Photo Shoot

What happens when some dudes in a band get invited to do a photo shoot for a Scene cover story? In this rare peek "behind" the "curtain," Scene staff photographer Eric England directs the action that culminated in the image you see here, which appears in glossy glory in the analog version of this week's "10 Artists to Watch in 2010" feature. SERIOUS ART was made in The Gulch that day. Edible food touched the ground and other things, including ears. There was pizza. This band is called Diarrhea

  • Hot Update on La Hacienda: Opening Saturday

First we told you that revered Nolensville Road Mexican restaurant La Hacienda would reopen today. Then we told you that inspection delays had postponed the opening to Monday. Eric EnglandNow my excellent colleague Chris Chamberlain has talked again to Carlos Yepez Jr. (who owns the restaurant with his family), and Yepez says they got the green light from the last inspector, so opening day is tomorrow! I can imagine this is great news for foodies planning their weekend activities. (Tal
