  • The Spin: The Virgins at 3rd and Lindsley

Photo by Tanya Wright Check out the slideshow for more photos. The impossibly catchy chorus to The Virgins' very first song last night stated, "Teen lovers don't wait / Vacation is over." Or something like that. As best we could decipher the song seemed to be the band's mandate for teenage doin' it, so clearly these guys aren't the virgins they advertise themselves to be. Must be that irony stuff we've been hearing so much about. Debauchery was sort of the running theme of the set: cocaine b

  • Creamin' Over The Privates: Album Release April 3, Redesigned Website and More

Even more news from The Privates: They've just re-launched their website, and they've made Motion available for download (for only $5) via Bandcamp. From my Critic's Pick for tomorrow night's release show at The Basement: The Privates' appreciation for the cream of the indie-rock crop is well-documented: Their performance as the backing band for Walkmen frontman Hamilton Leithauser on a song at The Basement last October received national coverage. Their latest EP Motion, however, is rife with n

  • Elvis Costello Records With T Bone Burnett, Loves Nashville and Likes Starbucks

Sittin' and Thinkin'. About extra caramel. So here's some news that nearly made Jim Ridley pass out in my cubicle: Elvis Costello recently recorded a three-day session with T Bone Burnett at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studio. The fruit of their labors is Secret, Profane & Sugarcane (produced by Burnett and recorded by Mike Piersante), and it will be released June 2 by Hear Music. According to a terribly smartly written press release, a handful of legendary session players--Jerry Douglas among t

  • Monday Morning Mystery Haikus

It is far too often that we open ourselves up, let down our guard, create or participate in something completely questionable or ridiculous and then blame it on boredom. I make no excuses for what you are about to read, nor am I offering any explanations. Simply put, I have taken the concepts and my opinions of 15 local rock bands and described them in haiku. I'd say most of them are pretty easy, some have multiple interpretations, but all pertain strictly to local bands. Feel free to "solve

  • Elvis Costello to Play The Ryman June 16

    D. Ricky Rodriguez One artist we can always count on showing an annual allegiance to Nashville is Elvis Costello. Last week, we told you about Costello's forthcoming record Secret, Profane & Sugarcane--recorded with T Bone Burnett over a three-day Nashville session. Today he announced a June 16 appearance at The Ryman, during which he'll be backed by a new group of imposters called The Sugarcanes. The band features Jim Lauderdale, Jerry Douglas, Jeff Taylor, Mike Compton, Stuart Duncan & Dennis

  • Bonnaroo 2009 Schedule Announced

A quick FYI: Bonnaroo.com has announced the official schedule and set times for this year's festival. Aside from Elvis Costello, Wilco and of Montreal playing at the same time on different stages, I think it looks pretty swell. The fact that Bruce Springsteen has been given a three-and-a-half-hour time slot makes my heart smile.

  • Bonnaroo 2009: My Conference Call with David Byrne, Elvis Costello and Steven Van Zandt

    D. Ricky RodriguezOn Wednesday I was pleasantly surprised to receive an invitation to participate in a press conference (via phone) with David Byrne, Elvis Costello and E Street Band consigliere Steven Van Zandt--three Bonnaroo artists who I'd probably fellate if only they'd ask. Byrne, Costello and Van Zandt each, in succession, did 30 minutes of Q & A (all questions Bonnaroo-specific) with music writers across the country. As any one of my Scene co-workers will tell you, I have an attention

  • Elvis Costello Speaks of his Music City Affinity in Rolling Stone

    D. Ricky Rodriguez The current issue of Rolling Stone magazine features an article titled "Elvis Costello's Music Marathon," in which the golden-voiced delivery man speaks of his affinity for Nashville, mentioning a nine-day drinking binge with Greg Allman at an unnamed Music City "rock 'n' roll hotel" during the recording of his first country endeavor--1981's Almost Blue. I was shocked to hear--considering his prolific career--that two years ago he doubted his will to continue recording. Thank

  • Elvis Costello Interview at Country Music Hall of Fame

Loyal Cream readers already know that Elvis Costello will play The Ryman on Tuesday, June 16. (Considering the way the Bonnaroo weather is going, sitting on a dry pew sounds like an infinitely better deal than seeing him in Manchester. But that's just me.) In other awesome news, Cream just received word that Costello will also be giving an interview at the Country Music Hall of Fame the day before his Ryman performance. From the press release: Costello will discuss his ongoing relationship t

  • Bonnaroo: Day 3: A Hard rain's a-gonna fall

Saturday may have been, arguably, the best weather in the history of this whole damn festival. A slight overcast lasted nearly all day, enabling me to sneak a tiny nap inside what would otherwise be sweat lodge of a tent. In between seeking bouts of rest in cool, dry places, I did manage to see some bands as well.

  • How I Became the Bomb, Deadly Art

How I Became the Bomb have never made any bones about their affinity for '80s aesthetics. While many bands aspire to comparisons with Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones or The Beatles HIBTB are perfectly fine evoking the likes of Talk Talk, A-Ha, Culture Club or Duran Duran. Over the last few years, their keen sense for a new wave hook and idiosyncratic quirkiness have captured the attention of Middle Tennessee. Since the band's rise to local prominence fans have eagerly awaited the release o

  • The Rabbit Release Party at Cannery Ballroom, 9/11/09

Uncharacteristically earnest and excited about Friday night's Rabbit release party, The Spin rolled up on Cannery Row extra early. But our timing was bad. We arrived at the peak of a drastic, monsoon-style downpour of absurd proportions. We mean, srsly, September? We truly felt for the parking guy, who handed us a saturated fistful of wadded bills for our change. We abandoned our typically fashionable, self-assured saunter from the car to the club for a genuine, flat-out run. Say what you will,

  • Elvis Costello Is in Nashville. What's He Up To?

Turns out, as shit was getting real last night over at The Mercy Lounge, shit was getting really real down at the Station Inn, where Elvis Costello was sitting in with The Time Jumpers (see video above or check out this news item, courtesy of Tune In Music City). In other spectacular news, legendary Attractions/Imposters drummer Pete Thomas was spotted eating lunch earlier this afternoon at PM. That fucking rules. Now, we all know that Costello has a pronounced affinity for Music City, and
