  • Broken Social Scene, Creeping Cruds & more: Tuesday Night in Nashville

Broken Social Scene play The Cannery Ballroom tonight with Land of Talk. Big show. Everyone and their D. Patrick Rodgers are likely to be there—including you, if you win the tickets in our caption contest. (Hurry up, you've only got until noon to come up with something funny.) Update: Contest is over. The Creeping Cruds play The End with Blitzkid & Rock 'n' Roll Hoolligan. Writes Matt Sullivan: "The formula is familiar—rockabilly-informed punk, no frills (save for the occasional frillish

  • Sail on, Silver Jews: David Berman Calls It Quits

A little sooner than expected (at least by the Cream), David Berman has decided to end the Silver Jews. In a post on the band's Drag City message board, Berman said yesterday that it's time to move on. Yes I cancelled the South American shows. I'll have to see the ABC Countries another way. I guess I am moving over to another category. Screenwriting or Muckraking. I've got to move on. Can't be like all the careerists doncha know. I'm forty two and I know what to do. I'm a writer, see? • The Pillow Fight's Off--But The Pillow Riot Is ON!!!

The bad news: Organizers of the mass pillow fight scheduled for Sunday in Centennial Park (not pictured here--this is Vancouver) have apparently gotten a clubbing from Metro Parks, which said the cushion-wielding hooligans would have to have a permit to pummel each other. The exciting news: A spokesperson for the organizers, who call themselves The Optimist Manifesto, told the Scene's D. Patrick Rodgers on Nashville Cream that Metro police will be at the park Sunday to escort away any suspicio

  • Almost Famous: Fox News Covers Mercy Lounge's 'Road to Bonnaroo' Series

If you were at last week's "Road to Bonnaroo" 8 off 8th then you likely noticed the folks from Fox 17 on the scene reporting on the proceedings. Fox17.com has added video of the event, however, on a player that is impossible to embed on the Cream. Take a look here to watch an interview with Mercy Lounge's Drew Mischke, spot The Features' Rollum Haas and see the Scene's own D. Patrick Rodgers backing up Tristen on the drums. As you probably recall, The Features won the competition. Fox reported

ATR circa before* The latest in the excellent Lake Fever Sessions series is now up, featuring And the Relatives, who recorded with Caitlin Rose and Tristen adding vocals on two songs, including a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Ledge." Scene staffer D. Patrick Rodgers plays in this band and yes, we wrote and cared about them before he started working here. • Bonnaroo Monday: In Which the Bourgeoisie Complains About Back Aches

Looks like we're not the only ones that could have used an editor this weekend... Oh criminy, does my back hurt. Between sleeping on the floor, carrying a heavy-ass man purse and walking for 15 hours at a time, my spine is ready to shit the bed. I should have gotten a free massage while I was backstage, but making another human being touch the my putrid, grime-caked body just seemed mean. Plus, it's hard to drink free booze with your head in a massage chair. But that is one of my few regrets--t

  • Those Darlins in the WaPo, D.P.R. on Out the Other, Eliza the Arrow: Newsy Bits

Dustin BrownEliza the Arrow* Those Darlins' star keeps on rising, and they got a nice little write-up in Washington Post courtesy of Geoffrey Himes, who you may recall puts together the Scene's annual Country Music Critics Poll: "What makes these Tennessee women so refreshing is not their innovation but their memorable choruses. When "Wild One," their first single on their self-titled debut CD, begins, you may not know what to make of the ramshackle singing and guitar strumming, but you will soo

  • Nashville Cream 8 off 8th: '60s Night 7/6/09

Steve CrossKindergarten Circus Check out more photos: Part 1, Part 2. Were songs all better in the '60s? Are covers always better than originals? Are the dudes from the Pink Spiders still friends? "Yes" to all three, according to audience members we spoke to at the Mercy Lounge's '60s-centered 8 off 8th. The Nashville Cream-helmed show brought together a large and diverse crowd that started strong and stayed until the very end, demonstrating the lasting appeal of the Animals, Rolling Stones an

Steve CrossHeavy Cream Slideshows! Part one. Part two. Yes. We arrived at the Mercy Lounge's '70s cover night expecting to be challenged by that decade's rich stylistic diversity--everything from "Hot Stuff" to "Hamburger Lady," Television to "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo," Gary Glitter to Gary Numan! There was a cover of Glitter's "Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)," by the night's opener Home Keys, the one-man brainchild of Scene contributor Seth Graves. His set also included an acoustic take o

  • Phosphorescent Tonight at The End, as Next Big Nashville Gets Underway

It's Next Big Nashville time, people. Among those bands contributing to the nextier and bigger feel of this year's fest is Brooklyn's Phosphorescent. Whatchoo know about Phosphorescent? From our Critics' Picks, the affable "It's so Cold in the" D. Patrick Rodgers: Yes, Phosphorescent is one of the larger-name, non-Nashville acts booked at Next Big Nashville in order to raise the burgeoning local festival's national recognition. But primary member and songwriter Matthew Houck certainly isn't a b

(Click for a bigger version.) As you can see, it's quite the snapshot of the local rock scene, as nearly every notable figure in town made it out to see the Israeli sensations do their thing. Sunny with a chance of awesome!Music for you to download on a Tuesday: * American Songwriter asked the bands of Holly House to record the song they would want to hear when they die, for their "Gear to Die For" series. No one chose "South of Heaven" and I am disappointed, obviously, but not entirely surprised. Softies. ("Before you see the light, you must diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie!!!!!!") • For All You Jobless Hippies: Get Bonnaroo Tix on Layaway till Dec. 31

A random Internet search. That's right. Now you can buy Bonnaroo tix (lineup coming soon!) on layaway for five easy payments of $50. That's five whole bags of weed, fool. Actually, I don't know what $50 buys you anymore in toke-land--$250 is like the price of my gas bill in February. So skip your gas bill. Or skip rent for a month. Or pawn your guitars. Whatever it takes to guarantee you'll be mud-slidin' and 'shroom-dosin' come June of next year. But act fast: This holiday pre-sale bonanza bl

  • Moon Taxi vs. Lava Lamp vs. 12th & Porter

Much to the chagrin of Scene managing editor Jack Silverman, we here on the Cream admittedly don't spend a whole lot of time covering jam bands. That probably explains why we missed this news item from last year. If you're a fan of the local jam band Moon Taxi, don't count on noodle dancing to their sweet melodies and groovy grooves at 12th & Porter anytime soon. Apparently there is some bad blood (literally) between the club and the band, spawned by an incident in which guitarist Spencer

If you think my coverage of Bruce Springsteen's Nashville appearances was excessive, just wait 'til D. Patrick Rodgers transforms this here blog into the Dr. Dog-log--a comprehensive fansite with 'round-the-clock coverage of the Philadelphia baroque-pop quintet, ruminating over everything from band members' favorite colors to analysis of their extensive hat and sunglasses collections. I'm sure you'll keep reading. Judging by his litany of coverage of this band thus far--and the fact you're g

Yep, you read that correctly: Rock o' clock is at 4 p.m. tomorrow, Feb. 2, at Municipal Auditorium if you wanna watch Gwyneth Paltrow's country debut as one Kelly Canter, the fallen country star she plays in the currently-filming-in-Nashville flick, Love Don't Let Me Down. As you can no doubt glean from the lovely cover art, this week's glossy is our "Love Issue." In the cover story, our staffers and a couple freelancers throw down some serious knowledge on the more complicated aspects of modern romance, from the pains of being brutally dumped by your dumpy British turd of a boyfriend (ouch ... sorry, Spurge) to realizing you're totally engaged in a full-on bromance. The fate of music critics. To preface: I am 100 percent ripping off the idea for this post from The Onion's A.V. Club. That said, since we've been talking about love -- or at least being a dude-face -- a little bit around here, let's talk about falling out of love. Not with a person, but with music. Just as we have all inevitably looked at someone we once cherished (read: liked sleeping with) and suddenly wanted to pelt them with ice, we have all listened to an album or a band we once thou
