  • My iTunes Genius Is an Idiot

As it has for so many rock 'n' roll aficionados of my generation, iTunes has played a pretty pivotal role in my pursuit and attainment of new music. It has been at the forefront of legal downloading software nearly since its inception. In recent months, however, it seems as though iTunes has been taking unnecessary precautions in order to stay at the front of the pack.Virtually every time I open iTunes, I'm prompted with a message. Something along the lines of "iTunes v8.0.3.45 now available f

  • Listen to This: Podcasts You Can Believe In

Two good local podcasts worth checking out. First up, the We Own This Town "Best of 2008" mix. A good selection of indie pop-centric local cuts here, including picks by new WOTT crew members Joe Baine Colvert--whose Lake Fever update should really be called "The Colvert Report"--and former Scene contributor Andrew Smithson. From Hotpipes' "Born in a Bomb" to Kindercastle's "Postmaster General," they cram 15 capris-wearing, National Talk Like a Pirate Day talkin', strangely victorious songs int

  • Lake Fever Sessions: Elle Macho

Maybe you saw it coming, but Elle Macho have recorded their piece for Lake Fever Sessions, which is the new Lake Fever Productions/Tugboat Productions production. What you see above is the band performing their song "Sweet Pancello (the Ascending One)." In it, Butterfly Boucher apparently falls in love with "an alien space-man." Not that there's any other kind, at this point, but OK. Last September, the freewheeling Roger Moutenot asked me if I had seen this band yet. I said I hadn't. "Elle

  • Butterfly Boucher Is Mashable, Plus Other Social Networking News

File under familiar faces in new places: Tech site Mashable, in their seemingly endless "social music" series, has posted their favorite sites for building playlists. Among them is favtape, which "plays nicely with both Pandora and Last.fm so you can turn your recent activity -- bookmarked, loved, and recent songs -- into favtape playlists." And looky-hoo, Nashville's own Butterfly Boucher is right there on the sample playlist, between a very tired-looking Adele and those uppity Fratellis. Sp

  • Next Big Nashville's Road Trip to SXSW; Movie News

Landon is the Pigg in Page's blanketSo the NBN crew has organized a showcase slated for March 19 at Austin's Maggie Mae's Gibson Room. You might recall us bringing you word of Landon Pigg's and Turbo Fruits' appearances in the forthcoming Ellen Page-Drew Barrymore vehicle Whip It!, a tale of love, rock and roller derbies set in Austin of all places. The South by Southwest bill is the first appearance Pigg and the Fruits will make together since shooting said film. Oh, and by the way, Pigg plays

  • Butterfly Boucher on Perez Hilton

We already told you that local singer/Elle Macho bassist Butterfly Boucher is, like, totally Mashable.* That in addition to being totally pumped about the new Ten out of Tenn tour. Now, Perez Hilton has up and posted her "Bitter Song," calling it "very pretty" and a "ballad." This song was apparently also on Grey's Anatomy in 2007, but you couldn't prove that by me. Perez Hilton commenters, however, seem to have noticed. * Granted, the site she was featured on, favtape, is getting sued by EMI.

  • SXSW '09: Nashville Representin'

It's another year of aural overload at SXSW, and Nashville and Murfreesboro bands keep making the annual trek to Austin (Mar. 18-22) in the hopes of standing out among the thousands of acts there hustlin' for your ears. A list of local acts officially committed after the jump. And of course, this list doesn't include all the bands playing unofficially at clubs or day parties. (We already told you about the Next Big Nashville lineup here. And veteran attendee Janet Timmons of the Out the Other h

  • Taylor Swift in L.A., The Dead Weather on the Cover of SPIN: Newsy Bits

    * The other night I had this funny dream, where I was walking outside the Green Hills mall and ran into Taylor Swift. In this dream, we were pals. Not call-each-other-late-at-night-and-gossip pals or anything. She was like, "Hey, nice to see you!" And I was all, "Yo, what's shakin', Tay?" And we kind of small talked for a bit. She was wearing big clunky glasses--the kind they put on "hot" girls in movies to make them look "nerdy" so then we are "surprised" when they take them off and become conv

  • (Near) Full List of Next Big Nashville Artists Officially Announced

It's here! It's here! Next Big Nashville honcho Jason Moon Wilkins has sent along the full list of NBN bands, and we've got the exclusive for you. Locals missing from the initial list that turned up here include The Kindergarten Circus, Umbrella Tree, Tristen, Keegan DeWitt, Kopecky Family Band, Bad Cop and more. But a few remain conspicuously absent. No Features and no Privates--though The Features' nationwide tour probably has a lot to do with that. There's also no mention of Eliza the Arrow

  • Banged in the Jazzola: Anonymous Liar My New Hero

As far as I'm concerned, one emerging artist has already come out on top during this year's festival. The anonymous Next Big Nashville prankster included a poem in one of his/her (probably his) hilariously uninformative emails of misinformation and lies that I think really sums up what a musician--particularly a Nashville musician--goes through in times like these: oh city with horned tower promising gold to those who come to its gates reaping the past to disown the present a bubble of hope ri
