  • Rock 'n' Roll Poll 2008: Outtakes

If you pick up a copy of this week's dead tree edition, you'll find our annual Rock 'n' Roll Poll, compiled this year by Mr. Adam "Dave Matthews rules my life" Gold and myself. While you'll find plenty of gems in the spread (e.g. David Berman's favorite episodes of CMT Crossroads and what Brendan Benson thinks of himself), we were only able to include so much with our given amount of space. Thusly, we present to you outtakes--the gold that was just too golden for print. Or too superfluous. Tak

  • Telekinesis Interview

Michael Lerner is a one-man band called Telekinesis, and he recorded an album for Merge which he titled by adding an exclamation point to his band name. The album, which is enjoyable to listen to, was produced by Death Cab for Cutie guitarist (and erstwhile producer) Chris Walla. The reason I ask Lerner about Japan is because he supposedly really loves Japan, even though he's never been there. Which is basically the opposite of how I feel about Cool Springs. The reason I ask him about sandwiches

  • Weekend Round-Up: Smoke 'em If You Got 'em Style!

Adam Gold moonlights as a carnie.Yeah, I switched themes midstream. I'm allowed to do that, 'cause it's my damn thing in the first place. Besides, I think we're all better off having seen this picture of Gold smoking 39 cigarettes. In case you're entirely baffled as to why that photo exists, it was taken for Tracy's story about cigarette prices going up, and there are plenty more where that came from. Here's what's up for this evening: Charles Walker and the Dynamites at Mercy Lounge. Read Malo

  • New Brendan Benson, Big Surprise Tour & More: Newsy Bits

    * Brendan Benson's got a new non-Raconteurs album on the way (My Old Familiar Friend, out Aug. 18 on ATO), and MBV has an MP3 for you, "Feel Like Taking You Home," in which the phrase from the title doesn't seem to mean what it usually means in rock songs, unless I'm just reading too much into that. (Via MBV.) * The Big Surprise Tour, featuring Old Crow Medicine Show, Dave Rawlings Machine (featuring Gillian Welch), The Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle, comes to Riverfront Park August 13

"The only thing a label could offer us that we couldn't do ourselves would be money. You can give us money, but we already have the entire team of everything we need." That's Jessi Darlin, in a Reuters story about her band, Those Darlins. * A little more on the new Brendan Benson album over at Consequence of Sound. • Me and My Arrow: Locals Cover Nilsson at Mercy Lounge July 2

It saddens us to announce that Terry Price of local rock trio Oblio was recently diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. In order to help cover his medical expenses, Grimey and Oblio are hosting a benefit at Mercy Lounge on July 2 in which dozens of local artists will be covering the music of Harry Nilsson. (Nilsson Schmilsson and The Point are of great personal significance to me, since I've kept them both in heavy rotation since they first blew my mind some years ago. Just, you know, for the record.) On the one hand, you've got Me and My Arrow: Harry Nilsson Tribute Night at Mercy Lounge. It's a benefit show for a local musician--Terry Price of Oblio was recently diagnosed with Bell's palsy--and features a strong lineup of locals in support: Oblio, The Features, Eureka Gold, David Mead, James Wallace & the Naked Light, Heypenny, The Silver Seas' Daniel Tashian, and a supergroup featuring Mike Grimes, The Raconteurs' Brendan Benson, My Morning Jacket's Carl Broemel, Hotpipes' Jon Rogers, and

  • Nilsson Night at Mercy Lounge 7/2/09

Steve CrossBrendan Benson Slideshows? Well, there's this one, and then there's this one, too. We are fans of cover songs, benefit shows and the Mercy Lounge, so the "Me and My Arrow: A Tribute to Nilsson" shindig Thursday night seemed like a killer way to kick off 4th of July Weekend. And speaking of America, it was a benefit show to help cover the medical bills of Oblio's Terry Price, who has been diagnosed with Bell's Palsy. Sure, Americans may let artists and the working man fall through th

  • New Brendan Benson Album Streaming at NPR

Raconteur (and Raconteur) Brendan Benson has a new album, My Old, Familiar Friend, out on Aug. 18. But if you're like most people, the album is neither old nor familiar to you. So, the good people at NPR are streaming the whole damn thing for your listening pleasure. Says Robin Hilton: Benson is a meticulous songwriter -- and, as with his three previous solo releases, My Old, Familiar Friend is a work of carefully orchestrated precision. The songs are tightly wound, with ridiculously

  • Super Secret Special Guest to Appear at Tonight's 8 off 8th [Who Can It Be Now?]

Will it be as epic as this was? If you follow the Mercy Lounge on Twitter then you've undoubtedly noticed their recent daily tweets alluding to a super-secret ninth band who are presumably flying into town to play a super-secret set to close tonight's 8 off 8th festivities. By examining these tweets we know that this is a band who: ...hate Kings of Leon but love to make you dance... is very popular with boys and has had over 7 bassists...will perform at next month's All Tomorrow's Parties...h

  • 2009: Grimey's Top Sellers and Staff Picks

If you're one of the few people who actually paid for records in 2009, then you likely paid for them at Grimey's New & Preloved Music--Nashville's favorite record shop. If there's one group of geeks in this town who trump us with their music knowledge, then it's easily the staff at this beloved local establishment. Hell, Doyle Davis probably knows more about Guided by Voices than Mr. Miyagi knows about karate--Bee Thousand is the crane kick of indie-rock, BTW. This morning, Grimey's "indi

  • Miranda Lambert, Taylor Swift, The Dead Weather and More Chart in Pazz and Jop 2009

Yesterday, the Village Voice's yearly Pazz and Jop poll results went live. (Remember when D.P.R. was filling out his ballot?) To the shock and amazement of this one guy who lives in Jersey, Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion topped the albums chart. If you've been near an Internet in the past year, most of the Top 10 probably won't surprise you much: Phoenix, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Dirty Projectors and so forth. Meanwhile, to the mild shock and bemusement of this critic, Jay-Z's "Empi
