If your holiday travel takes you south on Interstate 65 to the Huntsville area and you want a detour, then in about 20 minutes you could be at Gibson's barbecue on Memorial Parkway. The smoker in the parking lot slowly cooks beef, pork, turkey and chicken to tender shreds. Beef and pork have a nice smoky tang, and the turkey meat is surprisingly moist. The smoke-roasted chicken is a bargain. I went with my many Huntsville family members, and several cousins got the loaded potato, a big baker pi

  • Reggie Crowder, Owner of Dee's Q, Dies

Reginald "Reggie" Crowder, the hardworking pitmaster at Dee's Q in East Nashville, died Sunday of a heart attack. An alumnus of Mary's Old-Fashioned Pit Barbecue and Prince's Hot Chicken Shack, Crowder learned the business of barbecue, brisket and bird and struck out on his own five years ago. He and his wife Tracey rehabbed a former garage at the corner of Riverside and Rosebank into a tiny yellow-and-red 'cue shack, which they christened "Dee's" after their teenage daughter. Neighborhood re

  • Pitmaster Pat Martin Headed to the Big Apple

Patrick Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint in Nolensville was hopping this past weekend, according to diehards who waited in line and at tables for up to an hour for slow-cooked ribs and brisket. But that crowd is nothing compared to the throng that Martin plans to feed this summer at the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in New York City. As one of 14 pitmasters from around the country tapped to participate in the seventh annual barbecue fest, Martin will prepare enough whole hog and sweet pickles to feed

If you ever get the chance to serve on the Grand Jury for Davidson County, I highly recommend the experience. Besides the chance to learn more about your community, you may be lucky enough to have Mel Harders assigned as your court officer. Mel and Gene Pierpaoli run Gallatin's kitchen-on-wheels Buffalo P's, which specializes in slow-cooked, hickory-smoked barbecue. On our final day of jury duty, Mel treated us to their pork, beef brisket and chicken, along with sides of coleslaw, baked bean

  • Smoke `Em if You Got `Em

There are lots of things to love about autumn and the approach of winter: college football, changing leaves, hot toddies in front of a roaring fire. But having to put the cover on the charcoal grill is not one of them. Add that to the fact that my family has spent the summer living in a condo with a "no outdoor cooking" covenant and you can see the potential for a sad time around our household. Enter the SAVU Smoker Bag from www.hotdiggitycajun.com. I first met Jennifer Hunneycutt, the owner of
