Wife of Ex-Tennessee Senator: Repeal Same-Sex Marriage Bans

Posted By on Wed, Mar 5, 2014 at 3:04 PM

A group of GOP heavyweights, including former Sen. Nancy Kassebaum — the wife of former Tennessee senator Howard Baker — have signed an amicus brief filed with the 10th circuit court of appeals urging the court to strike down bans on same-sex marriage.

The brief states that the signers believe that “there is no legitimate, fact-based reason for denying same-sex couples the same recognition in law that is available to opposite-sex couples. To the contrary, [the signers] have concluded that marriage is strengthened and its benefits, importance to society, and the social stability of the family unit are promoted by providing access to civil marriage for same-sex couples.”

The list includes former Sen. Alan Simpson, former GOP chairman Ken Mehlman and Katie Biber, who was general counsel for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
