Conservative Christians are mounting a pressure-campaign to spring one of their anti-gay bills out of the House Education Subcommittee tomorrow. Family Action of Tennessee has sent an "action alert" to supporters to drum up emails to lawmakers in support of HB 1185, which uses religious liberty as cover for discriminating against gays and lesbians.

The bill bars universities from taking disciplinary action against conservative Christian student counselors in psychology and social work programs who refer LGBT clients to others. But in his alert, Family Action's David Fowler writes "it's just not true" that his bill would let students refuse to counsel gay people. Seriously?

"Our House Sponsor, Rep. John DeBerry, said that in his 14 years in the legislature he didn't recall ever having this much opposition to one of his bills," Fowler writes. "That's right, respecting the First Amendment rights of students in our public colleges is facing major opposition. Your voice must be heard today!"

LGBT supporters are planning to wear purple to tomorrow's subcommittee meeting to show opposition to the bill.
